I love little Water Voles. I loved feeding them at the Watchpoint Hide but was devastated every time one of them was predated. Lots of things eat Water Voles, even Herons, and it got to the stage where I had to stop the feeding.
So now, I am delighted to find that once again there is a Water Vole that everyone can see. Just follow the path from the Visitor Centre to the Mad Hatters Tea Party, and look along the banks of the ditch on your left. Be patient though, as Water Voles can be in-active for long periods. One of our sheep volunteers got this photo after walking up and down the path looking in the ditch for two hours yesterday. But it was well worth it. Look at the little fingers !
Water Vole by Cate Taylor-Teasdale
We generally name quite a few of our animals here, but we don’t know the sex of this vole, so we’ve gone for a unisex name that describes aquatic action............................Hello Bobby.
Bobby’s been around since at least Saturday, when Cate first noticed it, probably longer, so hopefully, many more visitors well get the chance to get up close and personal to this very endearing little creature.
