I was on site by 0615 and Robin and Song Thrush did indeed welcome in my new year shortly followed by the melancholy notes of a foreshore Curlew. The various ducks were getting going on the scrape in the dark and soon the lists started to grow.  The first punters started to arrive and a blustery, cloudy day greeted us.

It turned out to be rather a good day with plenty of visitors and lots of teams coming along to kick start their Bird race lists.... we now have 23 teams taking part.

By my reckoning 84 species were seen during the day including some goodies such as Spotted Redshank, Grey Plover, the Ravens and Marsh Harriers, Peregrines, Bearded Tits, Kingfishers and Bullfinches.

However the star bird by a wide margin was the Water Rail that pranced around peoples feet on the ice for most of the day...
