Our earliest ever Wheatear graced the reserve today with a cracking male being seen along the river wall at lunchtime. All to soon it was gone again with probably still a fair way to go on his epic journey northwards.

A good hunt around produced a continental White Wagtail amongst our Pieds and a fly over Lapland Bunting hinted of further northbound passage.  The female Hen Harrier was out terrorizing the birds over Aveley Pools this afternoon and six White-fronted Geese dropped in as we were closing up.

So a nice mix of incoming and out going birds today. Real migration under way and a real feeling that change is afoot.  Whatever next?

  • Hi Howard

    Hi Howard

Nice selection of the birds you have in your blog

Need to get up really early in the morning to see Wheatears here.  They have been noted in my local patch in Bedford (Putnoe Local Nature Reserve) moving about the local golf course in the past - must make that early morning call to see what is around this week (weather dependant)

Spring is here now and nature is buzzing

I would love to visit Rainham Marshes sometime in the near future and we have it on our top most place to visit along with WWT's places to visit too.

    Regards
