Paul is one of our amazing running leaders - this week we welcomed a new group of runners along to our Learn to Run course. Paul is here to tell you a little about how the course is going:

Our run leaders Robyn and Paul after their Christmas Eve run

I am delighted to announce that last Sunday, on a cold and windy, although gloriously bright morning, 7 Rainham harrier chicks (our running group is called the Rainham Harriers - so our Learn to Run group are the chicks!) successfully hatched at RSPB Rainham Marshes.  Rainham is a fantastic nest site for young harriers; providing a safe, supportive, welcoming and awe-inspiring environment in which to learn to fly (run).  The brood will be fed on a plentiful diet of coaching, guidance and encouragement, which it is hoped will enable them to build up the strength and confidence required to fledge within 12 weeks.

We are often visited by harriers who have previously fledged from Rainham, and on this occasion it was fantastic to welcome back Anne, who has been spotted as far afield as Wat Tyler Park (that’s 13 miles!), since being raised on the marshes. Anne joined us on a previous Learn to Run course - it was great to see you Anne!  This must surely provide the current crop with the inspiration and belief that they can achieve their own goals.

Now that the chicks have had an initial introduction to the nest site, and started to stretch their wings, I am confident that we will have much to report of their progress over the coming weeks.
