Small Red Eyed Damselfly first record

This shows a Small Red Eyed Damselfly in a ditch on the North Brooks seen on 16/7/2018 and is a first record of this species here. This is a relatively recent UK colonist from Europe (since 1999) and has been gradually spreading across the country from its initial sites in Essex. Note the pale blue patch on the side of the abdomen at the rear end which is larger than equivalent on the otherwise very similar Red Eyed Damselfly and is a key diagnostic for this species. The species has also been recorded very recently at Amberley Wildbrooks. It could easily have been at both sites for some time and overlooked.
