On Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 January, our reserve team will be doing some tree-felling and scrub clearance along the fence line adjacent to West Mead hide. Please be aware that the hide will be closed while this important work is carried out.
Lapwing (Chris Prince)
Lapwing chick (Anne Harwood)
This is one of our primary areas for breeding waders (lapwing & redshank); if you visit us during the breeding season, you may be lucky enough to spot the fluffy lapwing chicks on the islands in front of the hide. We will be putting up a temporary fence to protect the nests from ground predators such as foxes but there are also winged predators to worry about. The surrounding trees are used by corvids as vantage points to prey on the eggs and chicks so next week, the wardens will be removing some of these over-hanging trees to give our waders the best chance of successfully rearing their chicks.
Our remaining three hides will all be open as normal and there are plenty of spectacles to be seen on the North Brooks from Hanger view and Nettleys hide.
Thank you for your understanding.
