Today's Big Garden Birdwatch photo from Nikki features the robin.

Although bird spotting has been rather tricky over the past few days due to all the mist and murk there has been no shortage of robin sightings -they seem to follow you around the trail as you explore!

If you have robins visiting your garden at the moment then you could be seeing both your resident robins who stay with you all year and perhaps nest in your garden and some immigrant visitors from Scandinavia who have joined us for the winter to avoid the 24 hour darkness.  If they're following you around the garden they are probably your resident birds - a bit more accustomed to humans than their overseas visitors.

If you want to help them all out during this cold weather - and bribe them to stick around for the weekend's Big Garden Birdwatch - you could try a mixture of foods. They'll happily eat sunflower hearts and fat balls but mealworms will certainly make you a very popular host.

They may not be too happy to share - robins are rather territorial throughout the year and can get rather feisty. Listen out for their rather wistful-sounding song; it may sound rather pretty but in reality they're saying 'This is my patch  - go away and find your own!'

Last year, robins reached number 9 on the Big Garden Birdwatch list - where will they come this year?
