January's Volunteer Voice is our hardworking conservation intern George Hannan
I became an intern with the RSPB because I’ve always had a love for nature. Since an early age I’ve always been interested in the wildlife around me and what happens outside of a classroom.
After school, I went to college to study and learn about the countryside and wildlife. After two years of study, I then did a degree in the same subject. This helped me gain a greater understanding of the environment, wildlife and how it all works. Once finishing my degree I wanted to improve not just my knowledge on the countryside and wildlife but also experience the practical work that is involved in supporting conservation.
Since joining the RSPB at Minsmere I have loved every second of it. Each day is different and everyone is just so friendly. They are always ready to share their own knowledge and skills.
One of my favourite days working as a volunteer had to be the 8th January when a tidal surge hit the coast. Just being able to stand on the beach at Dunwich and watching, safely as the waves reshaped the beach and changed the landscape was incredible.
Minsmere has to be one of the best places in the UK to see wildlife. There’s all different types of habitats where anyone can see some of the rarest birds, and going out in the autumn to see and hear the red deer rutting is something special.
My plan for the future in conservation would be to get a full time job with the RSPB or another wildlife organisation. As it is a very rewarding and fulfilling occupation.
