Many thanks Sheila. Very interesting data. Strange that the Swedish birds fared so badly and the Finnish birds so well. I also note that one of the findings is that health monitoring needs to be very regular. I wonder if health issues in translocated birds differs from those in the 'normal' population?
I was also wondering about the food the translocated birds are given.
Wild birds are fed fish that is generally minutes old, being caught by the adult bird, flown to the nest and then fed to the young.
Translocated birds are given prepared fish that may be a day or two old. I know this isn't really old in the scheme of things, but perhaps even in this short time natural vital nutrients that keep the birds healthy may deteriorate with a noticeable effect of the birds health.
There was an item on the French TV yesterday morning about the Osprey colony in the Orleans Forest. There are some fabulous shots even if you don't understand the commentary. You need to go to 1h53 for the start of the slot. It's about 3 minutes.

They explain how they protect the nests & don't allow any disturbances etc.
I hope it works.
That was interesting to watch H even though I couldn't get translation, the footage was so clear ... didn't get progress meter either but found it using on-screen clock ... starts @ 8.25!
Thanks Wendy, that's about right as the progamme started at 6h30am. It's only a short slot but I enjoyed it.
Thanks Hazel. It was interesting to watch, and a lovely location. Wendy, I too noticed the clock, and the piece beginning just before 08.25hrs.!
