This Topic has been set up to follow the Autumn 2012 migration and wintering of satellite tracked ospreys, other than Caledonia and Alba from Loch Garten, who are followed on this thread, Tracking Caledonia & Alba
This topic replaces Satellite Tracked Ospreys (non-LG) Mar-Aug 2012
N.B. There are still some missing details (and possibly birds) which I will add once the information becomes available.
Latest on ESTLAT ospreys:
"Connection has been lost with female osprey Piret, known from the Estonian osprey camera nest, and Latvian male osprey Eriks, but in these cases it has rather to do with being out of range of the GSM communication coverage, in Southern Soudan and Gabon respectively. We hope to connect again to these birds. Estonian osprey Ilmar spends the winter in a quite unusual area – in southern Angola at the border of the world’s most arid desert. But the Atlantic Ocean obviously offers him an abundant fish catch."
Shooting suspected in the case of Ilze:
"Latvian osprey Ilze remained in the same spot in South Italy from October 26th on and died on October 29th. Shooting is suspected. This may have happened on Sicily or in the area where Ilze died. The transmitter still sends position information and members of the local section of the Italian Ornithological Society (LIPU) went to search for it, but on the occasion did not manage to find a device. A new search has now been organised by the Committee against Bird Slaughter (CABS) organization based in Germany. We sincerely hope for better luck this time."
I really find it depressing when these lovely birds are shot - it makes me see red

Thank you, ALAN, for the news (including sad/bad) from Europe. I am very relieved that Piret is probably OK, just out of range. I didn't think that "range" was a problem for the trackers ???

Isn't it the Eastern European birds that have the new trackers which use mobile phone technology instead of satellites? Great when they are around people, not so good - at least for us - if they are hanging out in the wilderness where there is no mobile coverage (but where they are probably safer, at least from human-derived dangers).
Of course! Thank you RACHEL :-)
That surely would prevent them from being used on our UK birds, almost (Cally being awkward) all choosing west Africa. Yet I seem to remember one being handled in the UK recently :-/
