Satellite Tracked Ospreys (non-LG) Aug 2012 - Sep 2014

This Topic has been set up to follow the Autumn 2012 migration and wintering of satellite tracked ospreys, other than Caledonia and Alba from Loch Garten, who are followed on this thread, Tracking Caledonia & Alba

This topic replaces Satellite Tracked Ospreys (non-LG) Mar-Aug 2012

N.B. There are still some missing details (and possibly birds) which I will add once the information becomes available.

  • YD in a hurry also - What is the rush this year - It appears from the information we have he is crossing The Bay of Biscay at the widest point and although this is not a problem it may be if the winds are not favourable - Any idea any one - wind speed and direction in the Bay at present.

It would be so good to see Red8T settled with a mate before his tracker fell off !!

Summer 2012 - Red 8T settled with last years mate and had a brood of two young this year after the failure last season when it was speculated his brood died in poor weather.

    Did you mean Rothiemurchus.

We live on the Gironde estuary & yesterday the wind was westerly, we recorded 23km/hour & stronger gusts, it's a lot calmer today wind still westerly. I would have thought this would encourage him to fly S rather than SW.

    Best wishes

    Hazel in Southwest France

  • Hopefully the winds will still keep in his favour.

  • First hint of problems for 13 from the Lakes:

"Some worrying news recently, 13's transmitter has been sending sporadic signals all very close to each other, still in a mountainous area north of Valencia, meaning he has not moved far in 10 days. Next weeks data should confirm better what may be happening to him, but we remain hopeful at this stage"

  • Thanks Alan - I was about to ask about 13 as the last update I had was 7 September. It probably is inevitable with 15 tracked UK birds to follow that one or two may not make the migration - But let us hope the data next week is positive.

  • Keith: I have B of B wind speed  animated chart on the Summary Thread, I shall look back for it and repost it there.

Oh bother, yes KEITH , I meant Rothiemurchus but got muddled in my head about the tracker.

Thanks ALAN for the news re Lucky - I'm choosing to believe he is .

  • News on the ESTLAT ospreys. Piret seems to have backtracked from the Sudan border and is heading back towards the Nile delta.

"Very interesting is a track of Piret the Osprey. By some reason she returned from Sudan border back to north. Another Osprey of ESTLAT Eagles project Ilze stops for longer time in Hungary, Hortobagy National Park. The male Osprey Eriks stops in Bulgaria, but Estonian Ilmar is still at breeding grounds."

  • How interesting indeed !!  ALAN . At least she'll be sure of a meal - maybe the Sudan in in the middle of another war with the south  - or another drought - or any other horrendous Osprey unfriendly situation
