This Topic has been set up to follow the Autumn 2012 migration and wintering of satellite tracked ospreys, other than Caledonia and Alba from Loch Garten, who are followed on this thread, Tracking Caledonia & Alba
This topic replaces Satellite Tracked Ospreys (non-LG) Mar-Aug 2012
N.B. There are still some missing details (and possibly birds) which I will add once the information becomes available.
Thanks Mary - I will leave that line off for a while - see if any one else knows anything or roy adds then just draw a straight line and assume.
I know how you like your records to be complete LOL pity that it was missed out, as Red8T is such a consistent bird maybe best look at last years data and see where he crossed the channel last year.
EJ's Memorial Balgavies Loch Ospreys 2023
Mary - Last year he was in Kintbury then headed down towards Hampshire - Eastleigh area/Hayling Island and then backtracked North before leaving UK from Isle of Wight. He also roosted in 2011 between Le mans and Tours so I imagine a very similar routing this season given as you say he is very consistent.
Keith - was just looking at his autumn migrations the last couple of years, he certainly does go to the same roosts, incredible when you think of it, wonder if Odin and EJ are as consistent, probably they are!
I certainly think once the birds become very experienced the tracking we have seen over the years indicates they like to keep to the same routes and favourite areas. Obviously weather conditions do cause for deviations.
Well we should see Red 8T now cut accross The Bay of Biscay to North coast of Spain.
Red 8T has had a tracker on since 2009, so how much longer will it stay on him, I hope it stays on until he comes back next year then at least if it falls off then there is a better chance that he will still be seen around especially Rothiemurchus FF.
Edit: Having sailed the BOB its hard to believe the Ospreys fly over it and sometimes through the night too in such a short time, never cease to amaze me the wonders of all bird migrations.
I am hoping we get more than three years data as I would like to see Rothiemurchus gain a nest also tagged 2009.
As has been mentioned before on here The Bay of Biscay is not a problem for ospreys nor is night flying unless conditions are not favourable but then the experienced bird will not cross in bad conditions.
Yes I hope so Keith, I want to see Rothiemurchus find a mate next year too, he seemed to be settled in the Ballinluig area this year, so lets hope a female turns up there. I hope he isnt going to be one of those males that go on for years never finding a mate. like The Laird.
Edit: Good discussions tonight Keith, going to have some supper now.
My bet is that this autumn, Red8T will take a short-cut across the B of B to Northern Spain. This is not intuition on my part, it is just what he has done in 2009, 10 and 11!!

LG 7 days; RW & SWT nil; LDOP varies
I shall be very pleased indeed to see YD points on my GE place him over land once again!
It would be so good to see Red8T settled with a mate before his tracker fell off !!
