JSB Do you think that 9 (98) might have flown into the side of the ridge? It seems a bit unlikely but maybe possible.

Yes, with sand-storm or gust, or asleep on the wing, like a driver nodding off. I also had thought of a heart attack or some other health problem.

    # Regarding the GE spiked lines the kml  software seems to throw up anomalies at close range. The settings on altitude are (from memory) relative to ground and from sea level, well whatever they are, if you input one sort (specification) and the expect to display the line differently, you end up with lines disappearing into mountains, etc. But I am only an amateur, not a software geek!

    # Lastly I have been 'PM-ing' Alan about the last point fixes of 09(98) and suggested the roundings in the data are to blame. Here is what I said.

0.00015......that small difference in the latitude is equal to 16.668 metres, or 0.0009 nautical miles.

I suspect that the difference is the 'rounding' in the program. Let's say the software developer decides, how the data upload to the satellite should be rounded and in this case, it is to the nearest 0.009 nautical miles. So depending on the atmospheric conditions, a slight change in the readings occurs, due to humidity or density of the atmosphere, then sometimes it rounds up or down, hence the difference.

I had been looking for a figure that the programmer, may have chosen, say 50ft, since probably he/she was American, but that does not match.

Can anyone come up with 0.00015 deg latitude in units of measurement that is a round number? That is how I got the metres and nautical miles, equivalent.

  • jsb.Do you think it would be an idea to start a new thread for your 'update calendar' so that it is immediately available for reference or have a link to it on all of your posts so that it is easily accessed. I'm sure it would get a lot of 'hits'.

On a separate theme should we consider restricting the 'Summary Thread' to just that and post queries, comments etc on another thread, much as we did with Black Jag when he did the cycle ride. It did seem to keep things simple and easy to keep track of.

    Any views?.

  • Both good suggestions there Mike, would be good to have a separate thread or link to the Update Calendar!  and to keep this thread to reflect its title "Summary"  eg

  • Update of Blue 44, Blue YD and Ceulan.

Just getting round to do these, as today has been hectic. I note the suggestions, which I have just read. The update idea was just that and it could be done separately, one problem I noticed straight away was that RD's updates, due to his business pressures are unpredictable. Let me come back on the other ideas.

Ok ospreys on migration have been photographed before. However this may be the first time a juvenile with tracker has been photographed fishing. If it has happened before I cannot remember seeing it being  reported.

  • I feel reassured seeing a juvenile fishing Tiger - gives me a bit of a comfort zone for the rest - stupid perhaps.   I am amazed that this young birds set off on such an incredible journey and most of them have not caught anything themselves.

The word we were discussing recently was  hyperphagia

Not sure it applies to ospreys or not.
