  • patily : That is certianly the case in the Loire Valley where I saw an osprey over the bridge over the river at Jargeau. The town stands on the river. The tourist office said, we never see any ospreys around here, 5 mins later I took a picture of one from the bridge. So either they get used to them, or, they just don't look up any more, because birds have always been there.

Some of the people of London, don't really notice all the aircraft overhead because they have got used to them. So I agree with you.

Isn't Seville in Analusia the place where FFyona Campbell walked through in 1994 (We know she did because it was covered on the BBC) ? and some Scottish ospreys were translocated to over the last ten years?

Seville 'translocation' did ring a bell with me, when you mentioned it. Here it is......

    RD 9th July 2009.

"The great news this summer is that a young female osprey translocated from Scotland four years ago has mated with a translocated German osprey of the same age and they have reared three young on the Odiel marshes west of Seville. Ospreys had been extinct in mainland Spain for half a century or more, before this project. This year's chicks were flown by Flybe from Inverness to Malaga, via London Gatwick. Dalcross Cargo organised all the arrangements and Tim Mackrill, from the Rutland Water Osprey project took them from London Gatwick to Southampton and fed them again before departure."

    I wonder what happened afterwards.

Sadly it is rather hard to keep up with this project as it does not have a website as far as I know. I do believe that some of the birds were tracked.

Probably the best starting point is Osprey Conservation and Translocation Projects

"13 has moved more slowly over the last few days, he is South of Valencia and just North of Alicante in a mountainous region of Spain, perhaps a little akin to the Lake District. He has flown over 1000 miles in ten days, so who can blame him for taking a well earned rest!"

What we need is to see the points giving his movements. Until then, we are in the dark!

  • Lake District 13 - If harm has come to 13 - Does this sound a case of exhaustion and lack of feeding - any views. Was 13 feeding and catching fish ???

I am staying positive at present but am not competent with points and movements like Alan/Tiger so they may have a better view than I would.

What we have missed in the past with fatalities is the recoveries apart from a few - This may be a case if something sinister has happened for a recovery and analysis of any root causes.

Maybe it shows that mating with your mum is not a great idea!

  • New idea! I could add an 'Updates Due Calendar' . Using our colllective knowedge?

It would save a lot of frantic searching for the latest advices on the websites.

    Here is a blank calendar.

  • So we'd know each day if we should be looking out for an update and for which bird/s?  A good idea if the workload wouldn't be too great, JSB.  I can't help wondering if certain HQ's won't frequently make your/our efforts futile, though, with their inexplicably missed updates :-(

  • Oh bum, still not happy about YD  but pleased 44 is still doing well.

Thanks for the heads up re Blog , MOFFER
