This thread has been set up to follow the travels of Caledonia and Alba, the young ospreys raised at Loch Garten in 2012.
Their mother is “EJ”, the resident female at Loch Garten since 2003; there is some doubt about the identity of their biological father, given EJ’s dalliance with a male from a neighbouring nest, Blue XD, both before and after the return of her regular partner Odin, who raised them.
Caledonia hatched on 16th May and Alba on 18th May; they both fledged on 14th July.
This is a link to the Loch Garten blog describing the ringing and satellite tagging.
Caledonia’s ring is Blue/White AA1, reading downwards. Alba’s is Blue/White AA2, reading upwards.
Following the tracking
This page gives a quick overview of the routes on a map, which will be more useful once they start migrating.
If you want to look at the routes in more detail on Google Earth, this page contains instructions on setting up your PC to do this.
This blog contains some useful information about how the tracking works – we are now on a 3-day reporting period.
oops duplicate post! The site is playing up
thanks Cirrus
One big difference for Caledonia and other one-year olds staying in Spain this summer, is the weather.
I've just posted elsewhere about the arrival of the rainy season in West Africa. Andalusia on the other hand is known for its dry summers, with little or no rain expected from now till September. It's quite hot too - the current 10 day forecast for Seville shows temperatures in the 30s.
I don't think this will be any problem to Caledonia, as so much water was stored during the wet winter and spring - the "reservoirs" site still shows the Guadalquivir basin at 93.99% of capacity. Some of this water will be released during the summer to support irrigation. Some of the smaller rivers might go dry, but the Guadalquivir won't, and Caledonia has also located a number of the reservoirs in the region. It will be interesting to see if she changes her habits.
Thanks Sue C. A really interesting report about the area Caledonia is in and as you say it looks like she should be ok. It will be interesting to see if she changes her habits :)
I am doing the Satellite Summary.......nothing on Caledonia since 29th May? Help!! The blog is old data as well. So nothing to report on Caledonia, since I took a break. About to post the others though.

Don't panic JSB There was a short report by Mike at the end of the main blog on 9th June saying Caledonia had basically spent her time in the same locations as the previous week
I thought that Caledonia was updated to 8 June.
And over to Mike for his update on Caledonia’s movements:
Caledonia has basically spent her time in the same locations as reported last week. However, last week there was some missing data for 25 May which was available in today’s download. At 13.00 hours on 25 May she was cruising SE at 11 kph, altitude 145 m some 14km from the Rio Guadalquivir and a little to the E of Real Club de Golf de Sevilla. She was back at the Rio by 21.00 hours.

GE update tonight showing Caledonia's movements up to 12th June - she is lazing around the Guadalquivir/Huelva confluence, but with enough movement to show she is OK.
Sue C thank you so much and do not know much about tracking but can see by movements Caledonia is ok and a special Osprey she is.
Thanks for the updates and very happy to see that Caledonia continues to do well it would be great to see her return to UK when shes older and to breed successfully. Shes a smart lady!
A better shot of C's points last week on her current favourite section of the Guadalquivir - the Huelva enters in the background.
To give the scale, points for 11th and 12th are about 200 metres apart.
