This thread has been set up to follow the travels of Caledonia and Alba, the young ospreys raised at Loch Garten in 2012.
Their mother is “EJ”, the resident female at Loch Garten since 2003; there is some doubt about the identity of their biological father, given EJ’s dalliance with a male from a neighbouring nest, Blue XD, both before and after the return of her regular partner Odin, who raised them.
Caledonia hatched on 16th May and Alba on 18th May; they both fledged on 14th July.
This is a link to the Loch Garten blog describing the ringing and satellite tagging.
Caledonia’s ring is Blue/White AA1, reading downwards. Alba’s is Blue/White AA2, reading upwards.
Following the tracking
This page gives a quick overview of the routes on a map, which will be more useful once they start migrating.
If you want to look at the routes in more detail on Google Earth, this page contains instructions on setting up your PC to do this.
This blog contains some useful information about how the tracking works – we are now on a 3-day reporting period.
Caledonia GE update to 22nd May
Spending most of her time at the spot shown above, on the east bank of the Guadalquivir.
However, there are enough local movements to show she is OK - furthest to a pond 6 miles away.
Sue C thanks for the update on Caledonia and looks like she has found a spot she likes. Fantastic she is doing well and thanks for the re-assurance.
Lovely to hear she is doing well - thank you.
Im so happy that Caledonia is continuing to do well, long may it be so! It will be great to see her return in the future!
Nothing been posted for a while, is there any updates on GE as I am not good at using it :)

Thanks Tiger
Great to know she is continuing to do well :)
I thought it would be nice to see Roberto's photo again of dear Caledonia eating her fish in Seville. Its a pity he didn't keep posting, even once a month or so to tell us if he had seen her at any time again.
EJ's Memorial Balgavies Loch Ospreys 2023
There's an interesting article here reporting on a census of birds wintering in Donana National Park, mainly carried out by Doñana Biological Station, (where Roberto works). The google-translated comment on ospreys:
"As for the osprey, wintering coordinated census conducted by the Biological Station of Doñana counted 26 specimens of this species. The wintering of this species in Veta la Palma, the main refuge of the species in Doñana, is also subject to specific monitoring by staff of the Ministry attached to the Odiel Marshes Nature Reserve. This winter has been read 18 different rings and marked three new copies. This control has shown that birds from countries like UK, Sweden, France and Germany use the farm as wintering".
This page explains what Veta la Palma is - it sounds like paradise for any fish-eating bird!
