This thread has been set up to follow the travels of Caledonia and Alba, the young ospreys raised at Loch Garten in 2012.
Their mother is “EJ”, the resident female at Loch Garten since 2003; there is some doubt about the identity of their biological father, given EJ’s dalliance with a male from a neighbouring nest, Blue XD, both before and after the return of her regular partner Odin, who raised them.
Caledonia hatched on 16th May and Alba on 18th May; they both fledged on 14th July.
This is a link to the Loch Garten blog describing the ringing and satellite tagging.
Caledonia’s ring is Blue/White AA1, reading downwards. Alba’s is Blue/White AA2, reading upwards.
Following the tracking
This page gives a quick overview of the routes on a map, which will be more useful once they start migrating.
If you want to look at the routes in more detail on Google Earth, this page contains instructions on setting up your PC to do this.
This blog contains some useful information about how the tracking works – we are now on a 3-day reporting period.
This current article, on a survey of wetland birds in Andalusia, gives an update on ospreys wintering in the region - they counted 77.
"With regard to species listed as vulnerable, it is noteworthy that the osprey population is stable with 77 individuals counted in January".
Is there an easy way to translate the link SueC has posted above? Other than copy and paste it into a translator!!!
That is great news 77 individuals counted in January, will any of those be breeding pairs in that area? or will they ALL be overwintering birds.

Yes what if Caledonia decides that she does not like this migration business and decides to pair up with a Andalusian bird?
Tiger, that would be great news for our incipient reintroduced population here in Andalusia ;) I guess Caledonia could stay in southern Spain until spring 2014, since Ospreys return usually in their second year, though she could move to other areas during this pre-breeding period.
This morning at dawn, Valerie's team and Manu saw Caley flying out from her roosting area heading south to the fishing area in the channel of the Guadalquivir river in Sevilla city. I met them at the river and we saw her catching a small fish, though few second later she dropped it. Then, she flew to the south following the channel and we lost her.
