This thread has been set up to follow the travels of Caledonia and Alba, the young ospreys raised at Loch Garten in 2012.
Their mother is “EJ”, the resident female at Loch Garten since 2003; there is some doubt about the identity of their biological father, given EJ’s dalliance with a male from a neighbouring nest, Blue XD, both before and after the return of her regular partner Odin, who raised them.
Caledonia hatched on 16th May and Alba on 18th May; they both fledged on 14th July.
This is a link to the Loch Garten blog describing the ringing and satellite tagging.
Caledonia’s ring is Blue/White AA1, reading downwards. Alba’s is Blue/White AA2, reading upwards.
Following the tracking
This page gives a quick overview of the routes on a map, which will be more useful once they start migrating.
If you want to look at the routes in more detail on Google Earth, this page contains instructions on setting up your PC to do this.
This blog contains some useful information about how the tracking works – we are now on a 3-day reporting period.
EJ's Memorial Balgavies Loch Ospreys 2023
I thought that when 06/01 returned in 2002 she picked up returning Ospreys heading north and followed them because she never came back to Rutland that year but settled on the N E Coast. Thought she was following birds up to Scotland and returning to her translocated nest.
What will Caledonia do - Well whatever she does I share everyones thoughts she does so for the best and remains safe.
Yes I think by now we should have a picture of Caledonia with the sun shining on her Golden Feathers.
Unknown said:Yes Keith a very unusual story with Red 06 (01). If the weather stays as good as it has been, surely Caledonia wouldn't move now. I just wish her to stay safe, but I cannot help but get excited at the prospect of a LG juvenile over wintering in Spain.
she is safe and most importantly, Caledonia stays safe and if so next year come back. That is my hopes.
Caledonia will do what she wants and I hope she stays but "What will she do next"
I hope stay
I may be wrong, but I think I read that some folk on FB were considering a wee holiday to Seville to try to see Caledonia. I really don't follow it close enough to say this happened or whether they found Cally.

Sheila - don't think they have actually been yet: it has all gone quiet, presumably because those going are making detailed arrangements between themselves, but I think they were looking at the end of the month.
I wonder if Caledonia is seeing other ospreys in the area. I remember Roy Dennis saying that there were at least 33 ospreys wintering along the coast from the Odiel marshes at the mouth of the river Huelva.
Thanks RACHEL. I hope they report back with pictures!!
Even if they don't find them, it looks as though (from ALAN) there will be a number more around to seek out.
If any of the bloggers going on this trip is looking in here, they might like to take a cruise on the Guadalquivir
Richard's recent blogs often have Caley in the area of the Isla Magica theme park, between the Barqueta and Alamillo bridges, which is on the itinerary.
Oooh, it looks very temping SUE C, particularly with snow lying on the ground here!
absolutely brilliant Caledonia is still in Spain and looks like she will stay.
Mary and Alan I hope she does stay and does not move when the adults come back
Viva- les- Spania Caledonia :)
