This thread has been set up to follow the travels of Caledonia and Alba, the young ospreys raised at Loch Garten in 2012.
Their mother is “EJ”, the resident female at Loch Garten since 2003; there is some doubt about the identity of their biological father, given EJ’s dalliance with a male from a neighbouring nest, Blue XD, both before and after the return of her regular partner Odin, who raised them.
Caledonia hatched on 16th May and Alba on 18th May; they both fledged on 14th July.
This is a link to the Loch Garten blog describing the ringing and satellite tagging.
Caledonia’s ring is Blue/White AA1, reading downwards. Alba’s is Blue/White AA2, reading upwards.
Following the tracking
This page gives a quick overview of the routes on a map, which will be more useful once they start migrating.
If you want to look at the routes in more detail on Google Earth, this page contains instructions on setting up your PC to do this.
This blog contains some useful information about how the tracking works – we are now on a 3-day reporting period.
That article also on BBC.

Well they are not going to put out articles like that if the news was bad.

Forgive me - I wish someone would explain :(
Does it mean that Alba is definitely in her winter home?

Well those articles would have needed the approval of Richard Thaxton. Now it is unlikely he would have approved them if he was expecting bad news.
I think the press is just Scottish press and a really nice bit of PR about LG and the chicks. Africa is definitely Alba's winter home but as with others they move about so I think it unlikely that anybody can claim Albas landing spot from Monday is her long term winter home. I think the articles are merely pointing to the fact that a little osprey from Scotland flew over 3k miles in 2 weeks to arrive in Africa. So my opinion Cirrus is that you/I/we haven't missed any enlightening piece of info from the daily record.
I also think the press release is timed for the positive movement positions due in today. They would not have released if Alba hasn't moved since Monday so I believe it will be another good news blog when it comes out.
LMac I think the point is that she has reached a point where she could overwinter if she chose to as she is already south of the overwintering site of a number of ospreys including Morven (I think).
Sorry Tiger, that is what I meant but am typing on my phone and forgot to add the bit about the overwintering grounds in East Africa, and thought I had rambled enough without adding more..
OK. Huge sigh of relief and thank you LMAC and TIGER - wishing my life away until 9 30 pm when I can boot up and find out for sure what's going on
I am beginning to hope Richard is having a huge computer and broadband malfunction, report seems to be very late, says she who was overly confident earlier.
