This thread has been set up to follow the travels of Caledonia and Alba, the young ospreys raised at Loch Garten in 2012.
Their mother is “EJ”, the resident female at Loch Garten since 2003; there is some doubt about the identity of their biological father, given EJ’s dalliance with a male from a neighbouring nest, Blue XD, both before and after the return of her regular partner Odin, who raised them.
Caledonia hatched on 16th May and Alba on 18th May; they both fledged on 14th July.
This is a link to the Loch Garten blog describing the ringing and satellite tagging.
Caledonia’s ring is Blue/White AA1, reading downwards. Alba’s is Blue/White AA2, reading upwards.
Following the tracking
This page gives a quick overview of the routes on a map, which will be more useful once they start migrating.
If you want to look at the routes in more detail on Google Earth, this page contains instructions on setting up your PC to do this.
This blog contains some useful information about how the tracking works – we are now on a 3-day reporting period.
I have just looked at GE and don't know whether to be delighted or sick to the pit of my stomach about how far Alba has flown and where she is Western Sahara
Will go back and catch up now

Hi MOFFER and thanks for tip off

My internet went down late morning yesterday (can't swear to time), a major problem. Went to make coffee just now and saw the router's green light, straight onto GE and my reaction reminded me of ALAN's when he saw EJ land on the nest in March ;-D
But on zooming in I've been left with your dilemma, PATILY - we're just going to have to wait and see - is anyone else wishing their life away yearning for the next update? ;-)
Great to see Cally amongst green trees, she should have had comfy roosting.
MOFFER, thank you for the news about Bynack and the pictures, it would be too wonderful if he is OK. I cannot find his Cape Verde points on my GE though :-(
IMAGICAT
Morning SCYLLA Glad you are back in buisness
Up until the last point yesterday the girls had been journeying for 10 days so surely they must have fished/eaten in that time. I know they were well stocked up when they left but that, presumably, wouldn't have fuelled them all this time, especially the distances Alba has flown!!!!!!!!!!
Good morning all and thanks for all the input. Heart has dropped a bit due to Alba's location at the moment. Hope she moves on pretty quickly.
Wonderful news that Bynack's tracker appears to be working again - fingers crossed all is indeed well with him.
Margobird
Patily, Scyalla and Margobird - I too cant make up my mind whether to be sick or glad re Alba. And likewise wishing days away to hear if she is ok. Surely she has to have eaten? She cant possibly have gone almost two weeks without doing so and travel this incredible journey. Praying she reaches the safe points. Totally nervewrecking this.
I follow the thread :) I'm rooting for Cally and Alba, I've read that Ospreys sometimes eat things other than fish, small lizards for example. Im taking comfort that at least they must be almost there now, and have probably found some food source on the way. I too am waiting for news !
What ???? Really?? LYNDA . I've never read that ! It's certainly encouraging.
Yes, it was in some old records which are on a web page from America from the mid 1800's I think, if I find the link again I'll post it here:)
Aah, here's a link to various stuff, it was the first one i read, but the others look interesting too!
