Tracking Caledonia & Alba

This thread has been set up to follow the travels of Caledonia and Alba, the young ospreys raised at Loch Garten in 2012.

Their mother is “EJ”, the resident female at Loch Garten since 2003; there is some doubt about the identity of their biological father, given EJ’s dalliance with a male from a neighbouring nest, Blue XD, both before and after the return of her regular partner Odin, who raised them.

Caledonia hatched on 16th May and Alba on 18th   May; they both fledged on 14th July.

This is a link to the Loch Garten blog describing the ringing and satellite tagging.

Caledonia’s ring is Blue/White AA1, reading downwards. Alba’s is Blue/White AA2, reading upwards.

Following the tracking

This page gives a quick overview of the routes on a map, which will be more useful once they start migrating.

If you want to look at the routes in more detail on Google Earth, this page contains instructions on setting up your PC to do this.

This blog contains some useful information about how the tracking works – we are now on a 3-day reporting period.

For some reason I can't get both Cally and Alba's routes on the map at the same time. Am I doing something wrong?

If you do this.........................................................................you get that.

I just realised tonight that she [06(01)] was a sister of 8 (97) the famous Rutland male

And also of another successful translocated bird, 01(99) - a female who returned to Scotland and bred near Dundee 2002-2004. 01 seems to have been one of the many casualties in 2005. Sadly I have no details of the natal nest or parents, other than that the nest was 'in the Scottish Highlands' - which doesn't narrow it down much!

EDIT - sorry, Tiger! Hadn't (consciously, at least) noticed that you'd already mentioned 01(99). Don't think I knew that her mate (orange ZT?) was disabled - how?

  • Rachel   Isn't it interesting that three of those four birds came back to breed a success rate of 75%    More evidence that it is genes that matter.

I have just read the story of 06(01) and it has moved me to tears as these wonderful birds often do.

06 (01)  was a bid that wrote her own rule book. I just realised tonight that she was a sister of 8 (97) the famous Rutland male who could never find a partner. All the Scottish lasses would stop and get him to feed them for a week before they headed up north.

    Then eventually he found romance.......
Tiger that was another sad story I read last year, and wasn't the surviving chick blue 33 that visited manton bay and pinched a fish only for it to go over the side... 5N(04) is 5R sister who bred with 09(98) his first family in his 14 years :) I wish them all well on there travels and a safe return next year.
Thanks jsb. Where you have ticks I have dots so something has gone awry. Will redo everything tomorrow and hopefully get it all back to normal.

  • I am sitting here day dreaming/imagining Alba flying over the BoB I am awe-struck and amazed Young Alba who never went far from home to fly all that way and for all that time

  • ChloeB: Sounds like your settings on GE need adjusting. You have set for 'radio buttons' which work as either/or, instead of multi-choices.

  • Am absolutely thrilled and so relieved that both girls are safe on land.    What a journey for Alba.  I hope Tiger she has eaten - its been a long time since Sunday 19th to go without.   Hoping that they continue to follow their apparently good instincts so far.   So relieved that the Atlantic bit is out of the way - Alba's point of making land is too close for comfort for me.

Well there are no fishing places in the Sahara so they got to get used to going without.

Last year Ozwold got the fishing bit sorted and then almost forgot to migrate.

    Sorted now, thanks jsb.
