Weekly Chat, Sunday December 13, 2009

Hi everyone. If you didn't check the last few pages of the previous week, it was very busy. I'm going to catch up all the latest posts after dinner.

  • Enjoyed all the pictures and links, here this morning everything was was white with the frost and a part of the garden that hasn't got the sun is still white. This morning while out shopping looked across the Forth and there was a bank of cloud over on the other side and the tip of Arthur's Seat was sticking out the top of the clouds like the tip of a giant mountain. Will have to go on a shopping trip to Edinburgh tomorrow to see if I can think up some pressies for sister in law and her sister but trying to think up presents for ladies is something that is difficult for men.

Re the clootie dumpling the cousins enjoyed it that much  they had to get doggie bags to take home.

Annette here  is another one for you I will be making potted hough for the new year.

I love those old train rides as well. Just before my dad died a while back we took him on the Tenterden railway and, like you, we have such lovely family memories of the day. Weather was great, steam engine puffing away. Magic. http://www.kesr.org.uk/pullman-dining.html

Gary, the Kent and East Sussex Railway you may remember goes from Tenterden (Kent) to Bodiam Castle. ( East Sussex )    In fact I have just  returned from shopping in Tenterden and was held up at the level crossing to let the steam train pass. We have a station in our village and everyone who visits us insist on a trip on the train. I still never tire from seeing the various engines.

  • DjoanS, great photo. I had a couple of rides on a carousel this summer having not been on one for some years. I enjoyed it just as much as ever.

Gary, you are obviously trying to stir things up here or if that was truly your attitude, I can't believe you are still married !

  • Gary ... I think STORM is definitely the operative word :))

  • Djoans : Thanks for the picture of the carousel from the Dublin christmas market. Lady P is off to Dublin on tuesday flying from Stanstead with her son to visit relatives in Co Carlow. I am left to man the fort and look after the Thunderdog.

George G : Every time you post it reminds me of my childhood in Dundee. Clootie Dumplings and Potted Hough. It will be Stovies next.

  • Alan - I hope Lady P enjoys her break in Co Carlow - I think it is the only county in Ireland that I have never been in! I spent many happy holidays in Arklow, Co Wicklow, next to Co Carlow, as my grandfather lived there!

  • Good grief! You guys have been burning up the blog pages all day - apparently it's silly Sunday in full throttle, what with osprey bolognese, golf puns (I think), and provocative remarks from Gary about women liking gifts of household/kitchen goods!  My sister and I woke our mother up very early on Christmas morning eons ago and made her open her gift - a frying pan - which she then brandished at us and yelled for us to go back to bed. We were quite surprised by her reaction at the time, but all is clear now. The only thing I'd like as a kitchen gift at this point would be a chef.  Drove back from breakfast yesterday in torrential rain that windshield wipers couldn't keep up with, but brilliant sunshine this morning with puffy clouds the only reminder of storm - oh and dirty patio under bird feeder. Going to head to gym and then do some tidying up. Thanks for lovely photos and for bringing a smile to my face - a great way to start the day.

Carlow is the second smallest county in Ireland. I guess people will be asking what is the smallest one?
