This Topic has been set up to follow the Spring 2012 migration, and summer activities, of satellite tracked ospreys, excluding Rothes and Tore from Loch Garten, who are followed on this thread.
It replaces this earlier thread, Satellite Tracked Ospreys (non-LG) Aug 2011 - Feb 2012.
Up to 2009 - Rutland used 01 - 02 etc and refered to the bird as 01 - 02. Now there were many 01s and 02s but as you can see from Dyfi we have on the ring 03/08 which does signify the 03 is from 2008.
The new numbering such as Blue 30 or AA2 does not signify the year on the ring so unfortunately records have to be kept if you wish later to identify year of birth.
Names - I am not a fan but accept these as it is an easy way of identifying a bird that is popular such as Caledonia and Alba. I in particular have liked the names chosen at Loch Garten and Dyfi as these are appropiate to why they were chosen.
Aberfoyle - Yes Tia Maria (TM) and Tony (TN) will be easy to remember (They Stick) - B & B we must speak to Aberfoyle on one of our visits next year who picked them.
Highland Wildlife - Roy was looking for an individual private donation and it appears this may have come in the way of Stan - As to the other three we will have to wait and see what Roy has done - I know he is fond of Morven and maybe that is why he has tagged one of her chicks and also to see if it migrates to where mother goes - He was keen to do that with Logie.
I was speculating the tagging of Blue DX/Green J chicks but only one chick so may be not ?.
In the past Roy was reluctant to tag single chicks but then Morven's chick this year is single and so is Dyfi and LOTL chicks and Lake District so maybe.
I'm wondering if it is a deliberate decision to tag mostly single chicks this year (with the exception of Cally & Alba, obviously). There would be an obvious scientific value in seeing if singletons do better or worse than those which have had to compete to survive from hatching.
I think the idea that "Stan" is the sponsor of Morven's chick's transmitter may be a "red herring". Stan Laybourne is a collaborator of Roy D; he's the guy who watches out for Morven when she goes on her fishing trips to Caithness, which she may do soon as it's part of her pre-migration routine. Roy has not yet posted the ring ID for the chick.
If you don't like Stan, be prepared for a "Fred", as Roy offered to name an osprey as a thank you to Frederic Bacuez in Senegal, after his work on tracing the remains of Joe.
I think tagged birds do need to be named; I suspect the use of ring IDs only for some of this year's juveniles will lead to a lot of confusion here. However I feel that names with local associations (rivers, mountains etc) are more appropriate than human ones.

Yes, I'm inclined to agree with you there Sue. Although I have to admit to still having a certain fondness for 'Marge' and 'Stressed Eric'...and of course our Henry! Not forgetting Nora and Monty too! :)

I hadn't realised that the female at Dyfi had the suffix 08 on the white 03 darvi???!!!. As a convention I had thought that Rutland used the year (in brackets) just for clarification purposes and it was not on the darvic. I like this idea for example the juvenile at LOTL this year is Darvic Blue 44 with suffix (12) added when we refer to him purely for identification purposes. This would please those, who like me, doesn't want to "humanise" them and also allow those who want a nickname to call the osprey what they want.

I think you are correct about Dyfi Bird only having 03 (Stand Corrected) - I saw the 03 repeated and mistaked the 3 for an 8 thinking 03 and 08 - Yes it is therefore a ridiculous numbering system with loads of 2s and 3s.
PATILY - Regarding Blue DX and Green J - I think Richard or one of the staff mentioned it when I was up but I do think someone on the forums contacted Roy and posted it.
LOTL - Does it just have 44 - I do not recall the suffix 12 on the ring but then I am not good at viewing rings - I have never in the wild been able to ID a ring even though you can sometimes see they are wearing one.

Single chick reported on Gabfest 20 July. For once I actually seem to have chapter & verse in my notes!
If it is in good enough condition, this is one chick I would quite like to see tagged - it would be very interesting to compare its migration route/ wintering site with its probably half-sister(s) from Loch Garten.
