Dunedin male:
Not long after and Madis is back, more successful this time but "Kala" is afraid to sit down again (and at this moment as I type Madis has returned and is on guard). The eggs have been getting quite a lot of exposure this past half-hour or so.
IMAGICAT
And he's back again - after this "Kala" got up and stood looking after him for a minute, those poor eggs!
Sorry, yet another kalakotkas video, but the situation is developing :o
Kala has been restless, needs a break, so when Madis flies in with moss he gets a shock when he's left alone with the egg. For a while he can only "preen" the nest-cup, but then he actually egg-sits. As I'm typing he's fidgety, toying with this 'n that. I wonder if this is the first time he's incubated the eggs? Surely it can't be, Kala needs breaks :o
"Kala" returns, Madis was very quick off the egg!
The end of the series!
The egg in Estonia has been left for several minutes, Madis has dropped several small twigs on it, I think he's forgotten the egg is there.
A thing of beauty is a joy forever.
Mrs is back and sorts the twigs out. I thought her name was Piret?
Both birds off the nest, one flew off with large fish, all happened so fast that I could'nt see who was who as had just then looked in. Do we think these are two first timers ?
Madis brought the fish, but Piret didn't want it. She initially flew up on to the camera, but then Madis flew off with the fish, and Piret flew back down to continue incubating.
Rach, I may have missed something but I understood that the female is an unringed, unknown bird, that Piret is not around. That's why I invented a name, as it would be kinda awkward, as well as "impersonal" compared to Madis, to keep calling her "the female".
Maybe someone will correct me or confirm?
Oh , I see, - I couldn't work out why her name had changed! Does anyone know what they are calling her in Estonia?
I'm happy to go with the consensus, I agree it's better to call her something rather than 'the female'.
