Rach - there are so many people with medieval views on raptors, i.e farmers and of course the hunting fraternity who will take a shot at anything that moves. Where I live the gun clubs have decimated the buzzards so much so that they had to be reintroduced and are tagged but again, I havent seen one for weeks and I would always see a couple on the way to work. My husband came across 6 dead in January of 2011 in the same area. Very few people have respect for the wildlife and environment. Its so sad. My neighbours knocked down a house marten's nest three times last year, twice with eggs in it. Senseless. They do not realise the journey these birds make to breed. Pure ignorance but its detrimental to the birds.
That is so unbelievably sad....and pointless What happened to live and let live?
Wish people could be educated into the sheer beauty and complexity of nature and be in total awe
Have you all looked at the DYFI blog posted on Tues Very intersting and there is an absolutely esquisite image of Nora......just her head/ close up/full face

It seems rather foolish taking these beautiful birds and introducing them into a land where any idiot with a gun can use them as target practice. Surely education is the key here, but, of course, old habits die hard and parents who have no respect for the natural world and all it's marvels will unfortunately pass that down to their children.
A thing of beauty is a joy forever.
Patily : That is extremely interesting about a nest in Lancashire. I would not be in the least surprised about this although I have no idea where it is. There have been many more osprey sightings in Lancashire this year than any other county.
Sincers apologises ALAN I misheard my sister....it is a pair in Lanarkshire that have been nesting there for 20 years....ant ideas?
Still interesting about all the ospreys seen in Lancashire Have you any ideas about that too? That is, the reason for this
Rach: we have wildlife rangers but not enough to go around. The birds are protected but its catching the villans as always. And old habits die hard. We had a hen harrier in the area and I know that the gun club members were warned not to harm it but it disappeared too. A hen harrier is a rate sight in our area. Barn owls I used to see frequently but again havent seen one in years. One word ............ depressing!
And equally depressing that too few people care
