I offered yesterday to start a new Topic once Bynack had fledged, but as we now have the updated Satellite Tracking page, and biography pages for Tore and Bynack, and there are some tracking results for Tore on Google Earth, I’ve gone ahead with it.
A brief introduction to the ospreys we’re tracking – first, the class of 2011.
Tore – link to her Biography
Tore is the elder of this year’s juveniles, her ring is blue/white 48. She fledged on Tuesday 12th July aged 54 days, and has started to do a little exploring.
Bynack – link to his Biography
Tore’s younger brother, ring blue/white 47. Bynack is aged 53 days today and has yet to fledge.
Edit: He has fledged, at 10.18 am today 16/7.
Rothes – link to her Biography
Rothes is the eldest of EJ and Odin’s offspring, hatched at Loch Garten in 2009. Her ring is white/black PJ. She migrated as a juvenile to Guinea-Bissau, and spent her formative months on the small island of Unhocomozinho, in the Bijagos Archipelago. Now a sub-adult, she has travelled north to Europe for the first time this summer and is currently in the Gironde estuary in SW France, where she also spent 6 weeks on her way south in 2009. So far, she has not returned to the UK.
Rothes' earlier travels were followed in this thread, now closed.

Does anyone know how cold it gets in the area of the Sturgeon Farm? Maybe Rothes has bad memories of crossing the desert and plans to stay where he is. Or just fly a bit farther South and stay in Spain as Beatrice does.
I know the thought is that they always return to the winter home they chose as a juvenile, but it was also thought when they begin a Northern migration they complete it . Rothes proved that theory wrong. Rothes has proven two ideas wrong so far. He left on migration long before EJ and now didn't complete a Northern migration. What other rules will Rothes throw out :)

Hello Barbara, I visited that area one summer a few years back.. the reason I went there is that it is reported to get a very similar climate to the French Med coast. So it'll probably be pretty warm most of the year.
Bordeaux gets an average high of 10 Celcius and average low of 3-4 Celcius Dec and Jan. I do not know of any Ospreys over wintering in France although they do settle all winter in Southern Spain and Portugal. I have a recovery from Portugal from one of my local lochs caught in the fishing nets in January.
Rothes will return to the archipilego of Guinea Bissau to that Island Ilha de Unhocomozinho and others she /he has visited.
You are correct some scary experiences chganges a birds approach. SSK never went for Africa after missing it first migration and wintered in Portugal afterwards as far as we know.
The more I read about these birds, the more I want to know... they're amazing

Tore and Bynack will move on when they are ready. Stopovers in juveniles tend to happen when - Hey i've caught my first real fish and maybe they stay a while and improve the newly learnt trade.
Deshar and Nethy first went to Kent and Glocester respectively and stayed there for four weeks before crossing the channel or in Deshars case missing the channel.
So they both could stay a little while longer.
Keith, thanks for that info - I just wish Tore would move along, the weather conditions in the UK are not looking good for at least the next week but hopefully she is in good fishing grounds at the moment with plenty of tree coverage to hide out in as the remnants of the Hurricane hit our shores - although I think Scotland is going to get the brunt of it.
