I offered yesterday to start a new Topic once Bynack had fledged, but as we now have the updated Satellite Tracking page, and biography pages for Tore and Bynack, and there are some tracking results for Tore on Google Earth, I’ve gone ahead with it.
A brief introduction to the ospreys we’re tracking – first, the class of 2011.
Tore – link to her Biography
Tore is the elder of this year’s juveniles, her ring is blue/white 48. She fledged on Tuesday 12th July aged 54 days, and has started to do a little exploring.
Bynack – link to his Biography
Tore’s younger brother, ring blue/white 47. Bynack is aged 53 days today and has yet to fledge.
Edit: He has fledged, at 10.18 am today 16/7.
Rothes – link to her Biography
Rothes is the eldest of EJ and Odin’s offspring, hatched at Loch Garten in 2009. Her ring is white/black PJ. She migrated as a juvenile to Guinea-Bissau, and spent her formative months on the small island of Unhocomozinho, in the Bijagos Archipelago. Now a sub-adult, she has travelled north to Europe for the first time this summer and is currently in the Gironde estuary in SW France, where she also spent 6 weeks on her way south in 2009. So far, she has not returned to the UK.
Rothes' earlier travels were followed in this thread, now closed.
And guess who is still lazing around on summer hols in France... :-)

I think this pokes holes in the rule book that when 2 year olds start on a migration to their natal site they complete the journey. It is looking more unlikely that Rothes plans to visit the LG area this year. Now it will be interesting if/when she starts her southern migration back to Africa.
Since nothing Rothes has done so far has been by the rules, maybe she/he will winter in France or Spain.
Rothes left before EJ; took the long way though Northern Africa to get to France and now "she" may be a male. LOL What other surprises does Rothes have in store for us ?

It looks like Bynack has flown across the water of the Loch. Now he must have seen where the fish come from ! That is great progress. It must be thrilling when a juvenile sees a fish in the water for the first time . I can imagine Bynack squealing with delight when he saw a fish in the water LOL
There can be no desire to fish until they see where the fish are. Up to this point the fish have been delivered by EJ or Odin.
First he was on one side of the Loch and then the other side. Was he watching an Osprey fish?? We need a little camera on the tagging devise LOL
Hello all. I am totally new to tracking the Ospreys. I have installed Google Earth, but it is showing ALL the tracked Ospreys. Is there a way to filter out paticular birds? If so please can you tell me how (in baby steps, as I'm not very good with technical stuff)

Barbara - I think someone explained last year that Loch Garten is very peaty, so not much good for fishing ospreys. Bynack needs to follow his dad to the Spey or other rather clearer waters.

Thank you so much for the updates on how Tore and Bynack are beginning to explore their surroundings. RACHEL/BARBARA I too think we have been told that Loch Garten is far too peaty to be able a viable fishing loch. Although osprey have an excellent sight, the fish are not easily visible in such waters.
I love BARBARA's comments about Rothes throwing away the rule book, how very true! Won't it be so interesting to see what she/he does nest year!

May I ask, How often is Google Earth updated?
I have been looking on a daily basis, but there is no new info since 1st Aug.
Google Earth is updated when the staff have time to input the data to the kml file. They seem to have been updating about twice a week lately so perhaps tomorrow we will have some news.
