Daily Update. Friday, 3rd June, 2011

Hi everyone :-)

Thanks for all the brilliant updates, observations, pics, links etc. on yestarday's thread.  Wonderful to see how quickly Star and Storm are growing.  Thankfully the wind has subsided and I hope it stops bothering the LG Ospreys for the rest of the season.

EJ's awake at the moment, enjoying a good preen.

Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

  • I have hardly ever seen a fight which Storm has NOT instigated >:(

    The wind is freshening.

  •

Just caught up with everyones posts and pics - they're great. Where did you go mum??

RtB thanks for both clips, see Star instigated the first fight and Storm the second one, all in a chicks growing up process.

See its a lovely day at LG with the wind still around but perhaps not quite so fierce.  EJ  just gone for a flyabout, she was stretching her wings  earlier.  Chicks home alone. EJ back now as I was uploading pic.

  • Thanks all for more great captures.

  • Back from shopping and find we are up to three fish !  I can hear the wind now, but by Cirrus's forecast it is not too bad. Looks as if we could have two girls again as the only quiet chick we knew was Deshar ( boy).

It seems quite likely, although there may have been something a bit 'wrong' with Deshar, considering his disastrous attempt at migration, so I'm not sure he's a great example of the male kind! We also don't know the sex of last year's chicks, although I believe Roy Dennis made a guess (and I now can't remember what it was). I know very little about previous breeding seasons here, or at other nests, other than the statistics and major incidents. What is typical behaviour for a male chick compared to a female?

  • Storm just instigated another fight, going for Star's wing feathers again, but this one was brief.

The usual sequence of events: Storm attacks, Star responds, some beak-to-beak fighting, then Star uses his/her weight to push Storm over.

  • Robert the Bruce. I don't mean it seriously,  as last year I thought there was a male but Roy said that he thought that they were all females. Deshar was thought to have problems, possibly lack of fish as a young chick.

  • Rats ! RtheB   I followed you intial instructions and place this

    mms://wms.carnyxlive.co.uk/abernethy

into the address box    and got this message

    Your input can't be opened:

VLC is unable to open the MRL 'mms://wms.carnyxlive.co.uk/abernethy

    Don't suppose you know why.

Well, I'll have a go at the RSPB video

No, for some reason it won't open the video stream of the RSPB site either. Might be somthing to do with my windows platform. Otherwise don't have a clue. Wretched Servers.

Well, it actually accepts all of these RtheB withhout bringing up an error message but nevertheless I just can't see the video stream after I click 'play'

    Hi Cirrus,

There could be any number of reasons VLC reports this. The log file might be useful, but it's usually difficult to find, and it may not be enabled.

If you can access the video via the RSPB and Carnyx websites now, you could try pasting the link

    mms://wms.carnyxlive.co.uk/abernethy

into Windows Media Player (right-click on the top area, go to File->Open URL) and see what happens. Your firewall might be blocking the connection, if so WMP shouldn't work either.

The other links won't do anything in VLC - they're web pages, and only stream the video through a plugin within the browser

We probably ought to continue this subject elsewhere, either by personal message, or we could start a new thread.
