Almost forgot about starting this one! Off to read last few posts of last week.
Diane...you can but Lily who is a HUGE dog had no choice bless her!! What is a weed I have super flowers and I know they are weeds.
Oh, Wendy, I absolutely agree. I used to have a boxer dog who weighed 110 pounds. He didn't do well in the heat, and I used to very carefully limit the amount of time he spent outdoors during the summer so the big fella wouldn't pant so hard.
I regret that the weeds I was pulling today didn't even have flowers, just big nasty sticky spines. I wore gloves but they still got caught in my arms. I used sweary words! LOL
Alan: That's a gorgeous pic of Hamish the Brave!
Diane...we have those and the Scots call them "Thistles" so being a coward I leave them>
OG Fly does obedience. She is, as you thought, retired from agility, though her brother still does it.
Lindy, well done on looking helpless when you needed a strong man for a weight-lifting job!
Alan, lovely pic of Handsome Hamish!
Hello to everyone else (still here, Diane?). We had another summer day yesterday but back to chilly and windy again today and probably some rain tomorrow for my next stint at Bassenthwaite. I was so looking forward to it being a decent day this time :(
Terry in Cumbria
Let's try inserting a picture of the Callanish stone circle on Lewis...
ooh, that worked! How about the nearby Broch (double thickness walls as you can see)
and finally, for now, me sitting in the entrance to a chambered cairn on North Uist
Oh, Terry, those photos are beyond words. Love them!!! I so want to see that area. And wonderful to have a pic of you in such a sacred place. Thank you!!!
Edit: So the place where you are sitting: Is that a burial cairn? And/or does it have a spiritual or practical purpose? Is it decorated/painted inside? Did you go inside? Are you allowed to enter them? Did you carry a rock from the bottom of the hill and place it on top of the cairn? Aren't you supposed to do that? So that the cairn continues to evolve and grow?
Does the Callanish stone circle have astronomical significance? That is, does it line up with a solstice?
Hi Diane. OH got into that hole but I can't kneel easily on hard stone - he had to crawl but could stand up inside. We wished we'd thought to take a torch! You can't really see from this pic but it is rounded on top, and looks very big especially as you walk up to it from a lower level.
Picked Chives, Tarragon and Dill to freeze and did several small domestic jobs while OH was scarifying the grass before dinner, then both watered everything in site, in case tomorrows forecast drizzle doesn’t arrive. Still very warm.
Our most regular Male Chaffinch has learned to sing at last! He treated us to a lovely little serenade this evening.
Mrs Greenfinch has visited twice today – still hope to get a better portrait of her, but did manage these – I don’t think she looks overjoyed at having to share with Goldfinch – she had already chased off the one lurking at the RHS:
Alan – good photo of young Blackbird – I love their really dark Boot-button eyes. And an excellent photo of Handsome Hamish. How is he now?
George – good to see you posting. How pleasant to sit outside for lunch yesterday. Sorry to read about the fridge – typically on a very hot day! Pleased you found a suitable replacement to be delivered soon. I’m glad you and Diesel are still getting on so well.
Lindy – as my Dad would have said “Happy new haircut”!
Wendy – how lovely to see three Herons flying together! Tomorrow’s walk sounds ambitious – are you walking both ways?
Diane – do be careful gardening in that heat – I hope you wore a hat and sunscreen – and kept drinking water!
Patricia – I hope you enjoyed watching the agility today, and that Tweed will be taking part again soon. Have the team been to that international competition yet?
Terry – sorry if I looked as if I was shouting my reply to you last time I posted – I don’t know why one part of the post was larger typeface than the rest! I don’t think it will rain all day tomorrow, so I hope it is a good day for Bassenthwaite. Thank you for your very good photos from your holiday - would love to see more – but why didn’t you smile?!
Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
Hi OG, it was flippin' cold!
