I have decided to start this thread for discussing technical issues that come up rather than messing up the other threads.
I guess the first issue seems to be pasting Word text into posting boxes.
Recently we have had three threads lockup up as a result of posts involving Word text.

Mary. Have you ever used a computer in DOS mode?
If not maybe now is the time.
Perhaps you should Google XP Freezes after startup. Here is one discussion.

Unknown said:Tiger we don't have an XP disc, computer came already loaded with OS. Have switched off for now as Chloe suggested. Try again before bed. Doggie will look at your link now.
The main thing is not to panic. I have been through these situations many times and they always work out given the chance and prove a good learning experience.
Something similar was happening to my machine back in November but I managed to restore it to 1st November and it has worked fine since.
Unknown said:Would be out of our depth in DOS mode even if we could get it. It's so frustrating, because you'd think if it was completely corrupt why does it boot up to my desktop with all my shortcuts, wallpaper, all peripherals and looks normal, but no programmes responding.
The disk does not seem too corrupt to me. I think it is more likely to be a virus. Your problem is that your usual solution does not work.
I used DOS for nine years.
Do you have a good fixit man who can sort it out if all else fails? Not that it seem that necessary.
Unknown said:Tiger have never had to use anyone before, but looks like we will need to look in local pages to see if we can find someone.
To be honest I do not think it will be necessary but it is useful to know such a person. My original computer in 1989 was built by a small company which then grew to be a big company and I no longer found the useful. However I found a good fixit guy who built my last two computers. It is always reassuring to know that someone is available if needed.
I helped someone with a problem like yours back in November. It was a case of saving the data in the way I suggested and reinstalling XP which went fine.
Tiger what about that one time that we powered back up and got this message...
I got the Checking File System on C: NTFS, and below that, a message said File Record Segment is Unreadable 427868, 69, 70, 71 -
we found solutions by googling but they all suggested running different programmes to fix the problem which we cannot do.
