Technical Test Thread

I have decided to start this thread for discussing technical issues that come up rather than messing up the other threads.

I guess the first issue seems to be pasting Word text into posting boxes.

Recently we have had three threads lockup up as a result of posts involving Word text.

Thank you for input, fellas, which I have not studied yet - have just come back here from laboriously extracting Ceulan from the kml file in WordPad and pasting it into a new WordPad, only to find I cannot then save it as kml.  So I did the same in Notepad and saved it as Ceulan2.kml "All files".  Google Maps will not upload it :-(

So I shall now look at your links :-)

It looks as if kml is a format all on its own. Just because you can load  the contents of a kml file into Notepad does not mean that you can get Google Earth to read from a Notepad file.

Was that you being sarcastic, TIGER???!!!  I wish we were allowed to put smileys on here, I'd give you such a splat! ;-D

Well I do not use mobile technology much so I have no idea what is on these machines.

  • I like the way you use the word "machines" for modern techie gadgets, TIGER - so do I :-)

Well, I think I've just wasted £1.82 buying an "app" that's supposed to allow GE to view kml or kmz files.  I can't remember whose fault that is ;-))))  On to the next link...

  • syclla I still do not know what software you have on your phone.

Try doing a search..how to add a kml file to google earth android.

***My, the insults are flying here this early-morning :o   I've been doing it for DAYS :'(

I got to the £1.82 app via your link to the forum, found the post saying "I've made something" (paraphrased) and followed its link, have since gone back to your post and found that your 2nd link would have saved me a few scrolls and clicks ;-)

The 3rd link is not hopeful news, it seems they've enabled GE to view online kml but not on-Android.

***Mind you, my search terms are not of TIGER's standard but I've tried lots of variations.

It's a Sony-Ericsson Xperia X10 Android phone with MIUI operating system on it (a custom system that allows an older phone to run faster/more smoothly than the original OS) but it's still Android.

I have the latest GE for Android installed.  It's even got Nouakchott and Dakar on the coast of Africa! :-)

However you cannot get the Dyfi data to load into GE?

Can you get the Loch Garten or indeed the Rutland data to load?

  • I do know that the Loch Garten Data is in an older format compared to Dyfi.

So it seems that we have different formats of KML being used.

GE for Android doesn't have menus like the PC version does, you can't add a URL in the network box because one doesn't exist.  So, apparently, one must create one's own MyMap in Google on one's PC and upload the kml file to it, which can then be viewed on one's phone via syncing thru one's Google a/c.  However, the Dyfi kml file exceeds the max size of 3mb, it's more than double.  I removed the 3 "surplus" birds - that brings it down to only <800kb, but the resulting file is rejected - could be because it's in the wrong carrier (Notepad), or because I unknowingly cut out essential data, or because there's a glitch, I may never know :'(

Loch Garten's data is going to be even huger than Dyfi's :-(

  • ah I see, thanks tiger.  I wondered if there was just a simple refresh button but thats fine, I will download the file again :)
