Technical Test Thread

I have decided to start this thread for discussing technical issues that come up rather than messing up the other threads.

I guess the first issue seems to be pasting Word text into posting boxes.

Recently we have had three threads lockup up as a result of posts involving Word text.

  • Another Google Earth poser :-(

I have installed GE onto my new (second-hand) android smartphone, but haven't been able to add the osprey tracking - can't even figure out where to start because it doesn't have the menus like our PC version does.  Maybe it cannot be done, does anyone know?

If you click this page  you will see a kml link. Click that and it should bring up the Dyfi birds.

You go back to start and dowload the kml file again.

I've downloaded the kml file on that page, can only open it in the phone's browser and then it presents a massively long sheet of data, there's nothing been installed onto GE.

I would do you a screenshot if I knew how ;-)  Learning curve is steep and long!  Just haven't got around to it yet, will do.

I found this tutorial in Spanish - I followed it as far as uploading the kml file to MyMaps, but the max allowed is 3mb and the Dyfi file is 6+.  I need a kml file for Ceulan only, given that we have lost Leri and Dulas and Einion's signal has petered out.

It should be easy enough to edit the kml file, if one can understand it well enough to know where to cut off :-/

    Am I thinking straight, TIGER?

EDIT - Have opened the kml in WordPad (Notepad displays it mindbogglingly), Einion's name is at/near the top, haven't found anyone else's yet.

It is easy to go to the moon too!    If you could edit the kml file you could change the date format.

BTW have you got Google Earth loaded on your phone?  I naively thought you might.

  • I have just had a thought. Kml files must be files like any other except loaded into cyberspace. I wonder if there would be any merit in creating your own kml files? That way they get designed the way you want them.

  • Thank you for input, fellas, which I have not studied yet - have just come back here from laboriously extracting Ceulan from the kml file in WordPad and pasting it into a new WordPad, only to find I cannot then save it as kml.  So I did the same in Notepad and saved it as Ceulan2.kml "All files".  Google Maps will not upload it :-(

So I shall now look at your links :-)

Was that you being sarcastic, TIGER???!!!  I wish we were allowed to put smileys on here, I'd give you such a splat! ;-D
