Weekly Chat, Sunday April 10, 2011

Evening all: Been out most of the day; just sat down - phew.  Off to check other threads; back in a bit!

  • Oh yes, I nearly forgot, "beyond the black stump". That’s one of those Aussie sayings like "back of Bourke" or "way out in the donga" which mean somewhere remote; some would say, beyond civilization!

  • AQ:  Hey, that River Rambler looks like fun - have only heard of someone called Fleur twice in my lifetime - the first was a girl at school and the second was the lady who co-owns the Rambler.  That female darter has a very long neck. Looks like you had a nice time with good weather. Hard to believe you're heading into winter while the rest of us are rushing outdoors every morning to enjoy the warmer days.  The equivalent of the "black stump" for us is "out in the boonies" (short for boondocks, a corruption of the Tagolog word bandok or mountain with its U.S. roots in WWII).

Thoroughly enjoyed talk by Rebecca Skloot, author of the Henrietta Lacks book. Very articulate, energized, focused, entertaining and everything else that keeps an audience's attention. Had to laugh: She was telling us that she'd started out in school determined to be a veterinarian but had to take a foreign language course as a prerequisite for a degree, so she took Creative Writing because "at the school I attended, that was considered a foreign language."  Brought the house down.

Anyway, off to check nests and to bed....

  • Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

Enjoy your evening at  Uni Annette (wots The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks all about?  )

Lindy – how simply ghastly to hear such a school boy error being made with OH’s stitches !!

Super pics AQ – thank you  . Oh, and we say ‘’Out in the sticks’’ meaning remote. But I have to say I prefer ‘ Way out in the Donga’  J

Good morning every one else – and happy viewing (if you are today) or happy doing, whatever you have planned. Enjoy the sun.

  • Another beautiful morning!  Clothes all packed, but still plenty to do – I travel like a whole army on the move with all my extras and bits& pieces!

Wendy – I hadn’t really thought about where spent Salmon die!  Actually, I thought I remembered from my distant past being told that, for protection, they couldn’t legally be fished on the way up river but only coming back down after spawning – obviously I got that totally wrong, and they wouldn’t be much good then because, as I recently learned, the adults don’t feed while they are up river.

Lynette – hope OH gets his scan result soon.

Annette – it’s true what “they” say: when you are retired, you wonder how you ever had time to work!!  I hope Whale Calf numbers pick up soon.  Didn’t expect to pick up a Tagolog word from California – missionary friend learned Tagolog working in the Philippines)!

AQ – lots of lovely Bird photos from your trip: well done with the Egrets in flight, and I love the Darter.  Swamp Hen looks a lot like our Moorhen (which, despite its name, is a wader) and, as you say, huge family of Wood Ducks!  Enjoy your next trip this coming weekend.

Site is a bit “iffy” this morning – and where is Lindy?  I hope I know about Buzz before we set off tomorrow!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Hello Everyone - no, I've not been abducted by aliens, I was just too tired/busy last night to come on and report on Buzz and the Vet episode:   also this morning, found I had no internet connection (we are on cable) and my OH has gone to do kitchen duties at our Sons.  The Cable company will only speak to him on the phone, not me, as  he is the designated bill payer, so I was resigned to wait until later for complaint. However, it has just come back on now -  hurray!

The vet was pleased that Buzz has not been vomiting lately, however, he has been very concerned that he has lost so much weight which is never a good sign. He gave us some syrup over the weekend to calm his stomach down, and some anti bio's, so we are to continue with those and wait and see what happens over the next week or so - if he starts to have an upset stomach again after the ceasing of the treatment, there will have to be further investigations.  OH is very upset as Buzz is 'his' dog and they are very close.  Meanwhile, Buzz is delighted to get twice daily slices of toast (to get the syrup down him) and lots of cuddles.  I have to be on my toes to keep track of when he has been given pills, or syrup, and OH also has to have drops in his eyes a couple of times a day & ointment at bedtime! -- needless to say, remembering all this is designated 'women's work'!!!

Off to get a hot drink and read all of the above - I do have to go out however, so remarks from me, later.

ps.  Thanks for all your kind concern.

  • Lindy – thanks for your report on Buzz and the Vet – but sorry that he has continued to lose weight.  I hope it will not prove to be serious, but definitely cause for concern.  I hope you don’t confuse the medications for him and OH – syrup in the eye and eye drops on toast wouldn’t have quite the right outcomes!!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Annette  what a nuisance you really are having technical problems, what with your printer and all the problems with the Panasonic.  Pleased you saw whales and hope that made the day better for you.

  • Diane  so pleased that you are going to stay in your house, even with all the bad weather you have it always sounds idyllic to me.  Good news that the storms were not too bad for you.

  • Good morning WendyB  what diverse weather you had yesterday.  I was watching LG and thought it was hail coming down.  Nice you met up with Dibnlib for a coffee and cake.  You must have missed your daughters after spending time with them.  Such a shame they are so far away from you.

Off the top of my head I can't think of any questions re LG but I am sure some will come to mind soon.  I should think by the time your friends are at LG there could be an egg.  Must be getting near to that now.  I can't believe how quickly time is passing by now and my LG visit not that far away now.  I know I am going to enjoy this experience so much, so much so I will probably want to volunteer again next year.
