Weekly Chat, Sunday April 3 2011

Hi all: very late starting this - was gone most of the day. I saw Odin on the nest - brilliant!  Now off to check on Lady and, hopefully, catch up on chat!

  • What fabulous news from Valmc.  An offspring of EJ and Henry, would you believe it!  As I have said over and over again, ospreys really amaze me.  Knowing the journeys they have to travel twice a year with all the dangers they have to overcome, the fact that they return to the nest most years - what superb navigation skills.  How do they manage it.  Of course all this information would not be collected were it not for the dedication of folk like George Waterston, Roy Dennis, Valmc and the band of unsung heroes who observe these birds - not forgetting folk like Tiger, Alan, jsb who collect the data!!  Thank you all.

And our wonderful pair are sitting, clinging, to the nest at present as I am sure the wind gets even more strong!

  • SheilaFE thanks so much for your kind thoughts.  It is going to be tough over the next few months but have to take her lead and stay positive.

On a lighter note I have managed at long last to give Billy a small stroke on his back.  He has been getting ever braver over the last few days and although he swore at me he d not claw me hopefully he has at long last realised that we only want to help him, not harm in as I think he has probably been ill treated in earlier life.

  • original goldfinch you are right and I will be strong but just as it seemed things were going a bit better she has to cope with another set back.  I will be strong for her and her family because they will need positive support.

  • Margo now that news of Billy is lovely!!  I doubt you will ever change him to be a lap cat, but he is clearly responding to your kind treatment and feeding!!

  • margobird - what fantastic news about Billy, letting you get close enough to touch him ... brilliant.

My thoughts of doing something useful today fell by the wayside! I was having a cup of tea in the conservatory earlier, and nestbox wars broke out in the garden!! The box has been there for five years and not a single bird has ever shown an interest. Last week a coal tit was poking around, but I thought it was just after insects. This morning, there has been a pair of blue tits in and out loads of times ... and also a pair of coal tits. Whatever the outcome, it is fascinating to watch ... a couple of pics of the blue tits follow ... taken through the window.

The nest box moved in the wind last night ... must move it back when nothing is around!

Lovely way to spend some time watching the nest box saga in your garden.  Wonder who will win and thanks for the pics.
