Weekly Chat, Sunday March 6, 2011

Welcome to another week. Do check back lest you miss the pics of many and varied birds plus a certain Toffee. And lots of news of course. Diane had another thunderstorm.

Diane - Uncontrollable children in olden days. Children were sent out to "service" as young as 10. Of course they ran away, thus breaking "Masters & Servants Act". Probably broke other laws as humans do. There were probationary school from which they also ran away. I found some twigs on my family tree who were regularly in trouble with the law - for playing the wicked game of two-up in pubs! Their 13 year old brother went one better (ahem), he broke into a school.

Patriciat - So sorry your OH has fallen again. Don’t worry about moaning to us. We do understand. I’m sending blue skies and healing thoughts to your house.

Our spring bulbs are appearing - confused by the unseasonal rain a few weeks ago. Poor things, there’s another possible 3 weeks of hot weather (34C so far today) and winter rains are not usual until May.

Whoo hoo. Less than 3 weeks to OR Day (Osprey Return day). I wonder what soap opera saga they have for us this year!

  • Good Morning All. Dry here this morning until heavy rain arrives this evening. Forecast does not look good for N. Ireland and Scotland as the snow passes through. I hope the snow is not too deep and thaws quickly for you all.

Our nephew, ( on OH's side of family) met and married a beautiful Japanese girl, seven years ago when he was working in a joint British / Japanese lab.  in Japan. She has been so worried as she couldn't contact her family on the phone, but they are all fine. They felt the tremors but they have no damage except for the telephone system being down. I see the news this morning is concentrating on the damage and explosion at a nuclear plant and how much radiation has escaped into the atmosphere. The TV pictures have been so frightening to watch so I just can't imagine the terror of those poor people, who had to endure it all.

Patricia, I find it hard to comment on the assistance you are to receive, as only you and your OH know exactly what would be of help. I do hope, though, that you will truly benefit from the OT's visit and it will make life easier for you.

Lynette, Is your chaffinch just flying at the house wall where there are cobwebs or little insects to eat. As you will probably know, birds will also attack their own reflection in mirrors or glass.
Hope you enjoyed your Indian meal. Thanks for all your pictures.

AQ, Thanks for the Friday smiles. I did recognise some of them. We both had a good laugh reading and remembering.

OG/ Alicat, I made the mistake, a few years ago, of having both male and female guppies. They were the most over sexed fish! I had to remove the females as they were never left in peace and produced far too many young. At the same time the swordtails started producing their young and I had the main tank and two smaller tanks with the young at various stages of development and the nurseries for the new born. I just couldn't watch the adults eating the young so used to follow the female around the tank with a small net to catch the young as she gave birth.

Annette, Such a sorry tale about the young man losing his life. I hadn't heard about the island moving eight feet. That really is a big movement.

I am being so lazy this morning. Must get moving.

  • Patriciat no I haven't seen any of the agility at Crufts.. what channel is it on?  Our agility club has just ordered flyball equipment so that's next for us.

  • Afternoon all,

Trish 2 : Crufts is on More4 at 7pm each evening. I have only watched thursday evening so far and I was delighted that the Flat Coated Retriever won the gundog group. Such a beautiful dog and 9 years old too. The cocker was 3rd so Hamish was pleased about that although he thought it should have won.

Weather is amazing today. Probably the warmest day of the year so far with current temp at 14.5c. This morning we went to Stamford and had a wander around the shops and market. Then went to Elton for lunch. Just took the Thunderdog for a walk and he seems in a lot better form now that the weather is dry. Off to catch up on the webcams and keep an eye on the footie.

Just caught both eagles at Hampton. Is today going to be the 1st hatch?

  • Twins for Phoebe. Both eggs have hatched:

  • Dundee 2 QOS 1. New club record of 20 league games unbeaten. Despite the deduction of 25 points and being in Administration. Congratulations to all concerned. Team, fans and new management.

  • Trish2 There's a catch-up programme about the whole show on More4 in the evening but I've been watching on the internet (dfsCruftstv)

  • Quiet start to the day and went for a chilly walk around Spey Bay, coffee shop open at weekends now so warming cuppa before driving home. Not much in the way of birds apart from one very vocal thrush. The mouth of the Spey has changed so much this winter and I can't get over how over the years the beach has built up so it is further away from the road. Once again natures full force and better for the cottages on the shore as the bigger beach will take the full force of high tides.

Right on time as predicted by the BBC (12 oclock) it started to snow...and it still is.

Good result for the Italian rugby team and I am sure Margo will get caught up in the celebrations.

  • Hi eveyone.

Many thanks for all your posts and pics.  Greatly informative as always.  I must admit to feeling a bit numb with regards to the Japan earthquake, so I didn't do much internet posting yestarday.  Then this morning's snow.  The thaw is well underway now and I hope it adopts Peregrine pace.

I see we're up to 402 people now.  A warm welcome to any newcomers :-).  Don't know if anyone else saw it but there was a White-Tailed Sea Eagle, spotted at Lochwinnoch yestarday.  This was posted on Facebook, and I can tell you I'm still smiling now thinking about that.

AQ:  Absolutely brilliant Friday Smiles.  I don't know if this happened(s) in Australia but in Scotland we have the strange situation of parents telling their children to not do something by telling them to do it.  Examples of this are: "That's right.  Leave your clothes on the floor for your mother to pick up", and "Well done.  Have no consideration for anyone but yourself!"  I can get reverse psychology as an adult but as a youngster I found it a bit confusing. LOL

Annette:  I'm glad your weren't affected by the severe weather in the Pacific.  Very sad news about the Californian photographer who perished.

Alan:  Another great result for Dundee.  They've shown awesome character since the 25 point deduction.  I'm a 33 year old Celtic fan and not old enough to personally remember when Dundee were one of Scotland's biggest clubs but I'm interested in football history and I know that at one time Dens Park was one of the toughest grounds in the Country for visiting teams, no matter who.

    Happy Saturday everyone!

    Paul.

Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

  • Caught up again.  Had a lovely Indian last night and didn't get back till 11pm.

Alan - thanks for the link.  Glad you managed to get them both at Hampton - just the Mrs on the nest at present, will it be today??

Glad to see Phoebe's two have hatched. Not much luck with some of the cams just now but managed to get some of Hope playing with one of the little ones and of Lily and Hope.  Playtime was on the menu.Playtime seems to be over and all is quiet now.

  • Hi Brenda - it seems to fly into the kitchen wall, window to the right , maybe it is seeing its reflection, then back to table, stands on the edge fluttering its wings, does this for a few seconds then flies at wall again. So strange but maybe there are cobwebs there, maybe a reflection from the window, who knows!!!! It can then turn round and feed then does some more and eventually flies off.   Not seen it today though. Dosen't come every day..

Glad your nephew's wifes family is all OK, its always worrying when there is family over the other side of the world when natural disasters happens.

Listening to Professor Brian Cox's programme on the Wonders of the Universe, he said that eventually the earth will die and the sun will explode and develop into a white dwarf as it cools down, mind you that is at least 13million years away, certainly not in our lifetime.  What a fascinating programme that is - time is infitesimal and its only recently that time as we know it was invented.

Been a dry, sunny/cloudy day here and even managed to put the washing out again.
