Weekly Chat, Sunday March 6, 2011

Welcome to another week. Do check back lest you miss the pics of many and varied birds plus a certain Toffee. And lots of news of course. Diane had another thunderstorm.

Diane - Uncontrollable children in olden days. Children were sent out to "service" as young as 10. Of course they ran away, thus breaking "Masters & Servants Act". Probably broke other laws as humans do. There were probationary school from which they also ran away. I found some twigs on my family tree who were regularly in trouble with the law - for playing the wicked game of two-up in pubs! Their 13 year old brother went one better (ahem), he broke into a school.

Patriciat - So sorry your OH has fallen again. Don’t worry about moaning to us. We do understand. I’m sending blue skies and healing thoughts to your house.

Our spring bulbs are appearing - confused by the unseasonal rain a few weeks ago. Poor things, there’s another possible 3 weeks of hot weather (34C so far today) and winter rains are not usual until May.

Whoo hoo. Less than 3 weeks to OR Day (Osprey Return day). I wonder what soap opera saga they have for us this year!

  • Morning all: ISP service dodgy again last night. Did everything on my "to-do" list - marked all stops in "geological" order so didn't get miss a stop en route.

AQ: I just potted some early cherry tomatoes and you're right; if you don't watch out "someone" will come by and snag the ripe ones (don't know who does it in my garden - possums? no snails in evidence...)   Just picked up The Island of Lost Maps from the library, along with - I think - the only (Kurt) Wallender book left to read. I believe Mankell has introduced Wallender's daughter Linda in his newer books, but haven't read those yet. Just had an Allison Weir period and found I couldn't put her books down: Those Tudors make Tony Soprano et al look like a bunch of schoolgirls! (Whoops, sexist comment there, but.....)  If my OH went to Italy and left me behind, I'd punish him too! Hurray - off to Germany on vacation? Good for you! Any high points to the trip? (Sometimes quick decisions are the only way we'd do anything - unlike Margobird and her OH, who very smartly get all their travel plans set up early).

Gary: Geez, such a lot of equipment and bedding (apparently unappreciated!) for Ms. Toffee. Hope you weren't planning any fires.

TerryM: Hope you get the volunteer gig you want.

Diane: Good luck - please wear red Santa hat or something so I can spot you! Very pretty little Chickadee. Love the name - and so appropriate.

OG: Too bad Bird Club outing (in rain yet) turned out to be a sales pitch. And you could've stayed home where it's toasty and dry!

dibnlib: We'll have to start calling you Imelda! :-)

Diane/Brenda: Replacement of TV has already been mentioned - by me!

Eagle-eye: Oh dear, are we supposed to be making "unique or inspiring" comments? That let's me out! :-)

George: That's so sad about the soldier - and then his dog died? Horrible.

Thanks ALL for posts and pix, especially those I haven't mentioned! Take care. Off to start the day....

  • Have been listening to the comments on Jeremy Vine about Theo the x Springer whose ashes have been flown back to the UK with his handlers body. What a heart rending story. bought tears to my eyes.

WENDY   was speaking to Laura at DW today and your name came up. She definitely had a mischeivous look on her face when I mentioned she had been putting you through the wringer!!!

Managed to get tickets for Eden Court tonight to see " Death of a Salesman" We read it at school but do not remember anything about it. We paid by debit card then a friend contacted OH to see if he wanted £31 of Eden Court vouchers for £25. Shame we didn't know a little earlier, but we are buying them anyway as South Pacific is on at the end of the month and Tell me on a Sunday is on in May and the new brochure is out so we will be able to use vouchers sometime as they are open ended.    Booked for lunch at Cafe 1 tomorrow and have now decided not to go away but to do our usual and have plenty of lunches out and day trips and good walks weather permitting.

OG Sorry, didn't realise that you were under the weather, get well soon and hope sons appt goes well.

  • Afternoon margobird, not sure when you go away but have a great time,is it italy you are going if so were abouts

  • ANNETTE  Imelda it is!  Remember a friend coming into what I call my wardrobe and shoe room and looking amazed at all the shoes. Didn,t tell her that as it was winter all my summer sandals were put away in a wardrobe. Anyway 2 old pairs will go to the PDSA and a pair without laces have gone in recycling bin. This is the pair I was wearing the day I slipped and broke my leg. I have been glaring at them ever since and wondering whether to get new laces and wear them again, then decided that they were a jinx so out they would go!

  • Meant to say that unless plans have changed, that it is Wed that Wendy takes her long drive down South. Do hope she has a safe journey and a great time.

  • Thanks ALICAT we go away tomorrow afternoon, staying in London overnight as we are going to see a show and then on to Gatwick on Saturday morning for our trip to Viareggio which is on the Tuscan coast.

  • dibnlb it was really heartbreaking listening to Jeremy and the comments about Theo and his handler, so sad.

    Enjoy your evening.

Gone to say goodbye to all now as I doubt I will have time to look tomorrow, look after yourselves and look forward to catching up when I return.

Not sure when Lindybird  is back but hope you have had a good break and both you and your OH are feeling much better.
