Weekly Chat, Sunday March 6, 2011

Welcome to another week. Do check back lest you miss the pics of many and varied birds plus a certain Toffee. And lots of news of course. Diane had another thunderstorm.

Diane - Uncontrollable children in olden days. Children were sent out to "service" as young as 10. Of course they ran away, thus breaking "Masters & Servants Act". Probably broke other laws as humans do. There were probationary school from which they also ran away. I found some twigs on my family tree who were regularly in trouble with the law - for playing the wicked game of two-up in pubs! Their 13 year old brother went one better (ahem), he broke into a school.

Patriciat - So sorry your OH has fallen again. Don’t worry about moaning to us. We do understand. I’m sending blue skies and healing thoughts to your house.

Our spring bulbs are appearing - confused by the unseasonal rain a few weeks ago. Poor things, there’s another possible 3 weeks of hot weather (34C so far today) and winter rains are not usual until May.

Whoo hoo. Less than 3 weeks to OR Day (Osprey Return day). I wonder what soap opera saga they have for us this year!

  • Morning all,

George : Diesel is a bit like Hamish in that he does not like to go out when it is wet.

Gary : More great pics of Toffee.

Patriciat : I expect I will be watching some of Crufts over the next few days. Probably just the highlights on More4.

Aq : I hope you enjoy your trip to Germany. There are plenty of ospreys there if you are anywhere near where they nest.

Diane : nice little bird reminds me of a coal tit.

Weather is sunny at the moment but quite windy. Quite mild unlike Scotland at the moment.

Golden eagle release video from Virginia:

    http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/wildlife/birds/golden-eagle/video/

  • wish we had the sort of dogs that others do. all our retrievers have looked out seen  the rain/snow and felt the gale strength winds and said ok, right lets go walkies. OH is out with Dillon at the moment and it is most unpleasant. My excuse at the moment is still that they will be much quicker without me!!!

  • ANNETTE only go to 2 shoe shops in town and they are opposite each other. The one I splashed out in yesterday does all sorts of wonderful colours and styles. I bought 3 pairs yesterday. someone else had just left with 7 pairs for herself and 2 for her Mum!!!!! they do give you a 28 day return refund policy as long as shoes haven't been worn outside, but have never returned any so far myself. the shop is called Rogersons and OH likes it too, think they now have 6 branches in Scotland, don't know if they plan to branch out further It is lethal for me, if I go in just for a browse I never leave empty handed.

  • Good Morning All. A dry but very windy morning but not the gales, snow/ rain in N. Ireland and Scotland.

AQ, Fantastic that you have decided and arranged your holiday. Sometimes, I think we spend far too much time thinking about things and can often 'miss out' because we hesitate on making a decision, especially if it is something for just ourselves
. I have heard many funny or even property damage stories about possums  in Australia, as we have some family there.

Gary, Looks as if Toffee has taken over your home with all her toys, beds etc. but I know our pets bring such joy to our lives.

Alan, It would be fantastic if we could have an HD camera at LG. I have no idea what the cost would be though, and obviously any cash will be spent on the Abernethy projects. We can dream though.

Terry, I am getting so used to the timed out page and have always opted out of receiving any notifications. I did notice that there are complaints on the Technical Pages.

OG, Sorry you didn't enjoy your Bird Talk last night. Trouble is you never know what they are going to be like unless you attend. Thinking of your son this morning and hope he attends his appointment.

Eagle Eye, Hello to you. You have been very quiet for some time now but we have noted how your OH has been making you work lately.

Annette, I really think it is time that they replaced your TV. You obviously have a rogue one. I had a washing machine like that and I was so a 'fed up' having to keep ringing them up.

Diane, We don't want to see you have been arrested at the demonstration !!  Lovely photograph of your black-capped chickadee.

Paul, Good to hear that life is back to normal, but with your sense of humour, is that possible in your household?

Patricia, Hope you have now found out what was rolling around your roof. May have been just a small branch. They can sound so noisy. Sorry about the cough and hope it is not some bug.

Wendy, I hope your roads stay clear of snow, but the forecast doesn't look great, especially Saturday, which I think you will have already missed as you start your journey tomorrow.

  • Still looks wintry in Finland but at least there is no snow on the nest:

  • Brenda  Thanks for the mention.  I do often read the blog with interest, but rarely think of anything unique or inspiring to write in reply.  I am not made to work; it is just that with the beginnings of spring I have been able to "get a round tuit" on some days.  There are still many jobs I want to do, and I am fired up to get more started as and when opportunities can be made.  The chance of some sunshine will help.  Todays weather forecast was either Heavy Rain or Showers, but now we have sunny intervals breaking through the clouds.  So maybe I can resume the battle in or for the garden this afternoon.

At the Bird Club there were comments about osprey sightings across the country - it does seem as if the migration is definitely on the go.  Hope to hear some named identifications of our known regulars nearing their nests soon.

  • Wet and dry, grey and sunny – different each time we look out the window!

Nothing much happening today – Cleaner comes this afternoon.  Will catch up with emails to mission friends – try to write to them all once a month but Feb was a short month and disappeared unexpectedly!

Heron – did you lose food from old freezer?  Hope it was insured.  Enjoy the new one!

Diane – take care at the protest – do you go to Indianapolis by bus, or have you had the car seen to?  Lovely wee Chickadee – a bit like our Coal Tits.  (Sorry, see that’s been said before me.)  I would love to go to the lecture on Owls at the State Park with you!  We miss a lot of the summer walks and outings because they are never clear about intended terrain and facilities!  We have our local Wildlife Festival coming up next month, but most of the events involve walks.  You’re right about the birthdays – his is next week, and I am just two weeks younger!  Unfortunately, both on Cleaner’s day this year so can’t have days out to celebrate, but plenty going on anyway.

Diane and Patricia – thanks for kind thoughts – I’ll be fine.  I have been quite “down” and dragging myself further down by trying to be okay!

Patricia – sorry about the noisy night - I hope you haven’t discovered anything nasty on the roof.  Sorry about the coughing also – I hope you can get rid of it very soon.  Which date is your birthday?  Enjoy the Crufts coverage – and positive thoughts for tomorrow.

Wendy – sorry about wind and further wet stuff – but probably better than white stuff right now.  When is it you set off southwards? – (I see Brenda says it’s tomorrow, so have safe travel, a great time and fun with your Daughters!)

Brenda – mentioning Eagle-Eye is so typical of the kind way you think of everyone, and is the kind of thing which earned you your Good Egg status!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Hi everyone.

Not very pleasent here weatherwise, with rain and strong winds causing a fair bit of havoc.  We've even had the sun trying to break through but the dreicher weather seems to be in charge of things.

    patriciat:
Your weather sound very much like mine.  We have big plastic wheely bins which bang against the building in strong winds creating a terrible racket.  Hope your cough vanishes quickly.

Wendyb:  I suppose I'm a bit of a night owl.  To be honest they could probably write a book on my sleep pattern.

    Alan:
Thanks for the Golden Eagle video.  Absolutely stunning birds.

dibnlib: Dillon sounds like a real charachter, wanting to go out in rough weather.

Brenda:  I'm glad things are back to normal.  I suppose my sense of humour is part of the normality.  I just like making people laugh :-)

Eagle-eye:  I hope your sunny intervals become longer sunny spells.

OG:  We did lose some food from the old freezer but thankfully not much.  We've not been hit by costs thankfully as the old one was covered by a maintenance plan.

    Happy Thursday!

    Paul.

Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

  • Afternoon all just drying off as on our morning walk got caught in a hail shower which was being blown at you by a very strong wind Diesel didn't seem bothered by it but he is very good and just stands and lets you dry him.

See the USA is trying to bring in a bill about the management of their forests and their is a petion to sign to try and get it rescinded.

The programme that was on Tuesday was a Horizon special about the wolves in Yellostone and also the introduction of panthers into Florida.

The soldier who was killed in Afganistan then his dog died comes from Kirkcaldy and he is being brought back here to be buried

OG hope your son has good news at the doctors today and Wendyb has a safe journey to Bath.

    george g

  • Good afternoon all and it would seem we all have pretty wild weather today, although it is dry here at the moment.  Been busy this morning finalising packing and catching up with washing, like to get as much of it done as possible as we will come back with a good load next week.  Glad the site seems to be back to nornal today, very frustrating yesterday.  Have only seen Billy once so far today and that was about 8.00 this morning, he probably doesn't like the wind.

original goldfinch so sorry you are feeling down and not to well.  Hope things will get better for you soon.  Sorry your bird talk was a bit of a let down but nice you got to speak to Emma, used to enjoy her posts when she was LOtL.  Hope your son gets on well when  he sees the doctor, wise that he decided he would still go.  Shame about your birthday and OH being on the same day as the cleaner, hopefully you will find time to do something a bit special.

george g  not very nice being caught up in a hail shower, especially when it is so windy.  Diesel seems to be very good for you and I am sure he is very happy with you.  Thanks for mentioning the programme, I have actually recorded it as it sounded interesting.  Probably won't get to see it until after we come back for our short holiday.  Very sad about the soldier as it is always and his devoted dog was so shocked he had a seizure.  I believe they are going to be buried together.  Saw some film of them together which made me feel so tearful.

Thanks for your post Eagle Owl nice to see you popping in from time to time.  We can see how busy you have been in the garden.  Hope you get to do some more this afternoon weather permitting.

Annette I bet you are really getting fed up with your Panasonic TV.  Touch wood we have never had any problems with ours, you must have been unlucky and to the rogue in the pack.

Lynette  that is a great capture of the peregrine, believe it is the Rome can and also one from Nottingham.  Things should be happening there soon.  Poor eagles at Decorah, they always seem to have snow each year and I wouldn't fancy sitting there for hours in the cold.

trish 2 yes it might have looked a bit suspicious if you had gone out with the camera re Billy Whizz van.

aquilareen Billy might be a bit miffed with us but at least he is going to fed and watered while we are away.  Don't think he will miss us too much because he will soon realise the food and milk supply is ongoing.  Good to hear about your trip to Germany.  As someone else has said spur of the moment things are often the bestl.  I am sure you will enjoy your 3 weeks away seeing the sights.

Gary  hope you will not have any flooding as it would seem from a previous post that may be getting some really bad weather.  Love the pic of TT, all the beds but she preferred the floor with her cover.  Glad she didn't hurt herself when the fireguard fell over but I bet it made her jump.

Alan  thanks for hatching reminder for Hampton.  Will go and look in a moment to see if anything has happened yet.  Lovely close up of the Decorah eagle but again I see they have had snow there.  Thanks also for the link to the Golden Eagle release.  How awful that it had been trapped in a coyote trap, so releived it was found and has been released back to the wild.

Terry M problem of yesterday has been solved thanks goodness, drove me round the bend yesterday checking back all the time to make sure my posts had actually gone.  Email notifiication back to normal.

Heron 77 sorry the wind is so awful where you are, I find these high winds frightening.  Hope it hasn't done any damage.  Good news about the new freezer and food storage back to normal and you did not incur any extra cost as contents were covered b insurance.  Your sleep pattern sounds a bit like my OH, I usually go to bed at least a couple of hours before he does.  He says he only needs  hours.  I see your humour has been mentioned and it always makes me smile when you come out with one of your gems.

Diane don't get into any trouble at the demo, don't want to read that you were arrested lol.  Lovely pic of the chickadee, what a cute little bird.

patriciat hope you have discovered what was rattling on your roof and do damage has been done.  You have enough on your plate at the moment.  I also hope you are not going down with this awful virus that seems to be doing the rounds.  Will think of you tomorrow and hoping that something positive will come out of the visit by the OT that will help your oH and you too..  Enjoy Crufts, usually watch some of it but will miss the final day as we are away.  Take care of yourself.

WendyB pleased that it was not snow that greeted you this morning but it sounds as though Scotland is really taking a battering with all these high winds.  I see snow is forecast for Saturday but by then you will be with your daughter.  Enjoy your visit to Bath and I do hope you have time for a bit of retail therapy.  Don't get blown away on your walk.

dibnlib was pleased that you decided not to go for a walk in all the terrible weather you are having.

Brenda H weather the same here and probably even windier down on the seafront.  Don't like high winds at all and because it is so strong it feels colder than they say it is.
