Weekly Chat, Sunday February 27, 2011

Morning all: Much ballyhooed snow didn't materialize, we had a sunny day but very cold tonight with temps just below freezing. Spent the first couple of hours today online with Dell Tech Support after a website I clicked on (via Google) delivered a spyware program disguised as an anti-virus program (one of those things that suddenly lights up your desktop with alarming messages about threats to your computer). I ignored it and immediately launched McAffee to scan my computer, which found nothing. However, the spyware program (called Internet Security Essentials) wouldn't go away until Dell's remote support took over and did a super-scan and clean up (LOVE that service! So glad I signed up for it!)

Trish: They said it will take a while for the autopsies on the dolphins. Glad your OH remembered his training and sat still, even if Mia forgot!

Diane: Have never heard of the Nevada Triangle. Will certainly keekp an eye out for the program  - we're watching DVD of The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest right now. The UK is (it's rumored) is warmed by the Gulf Stream, which perhaps accounts for the daffodils, etc., while you're still dealing with weather from what I believe is called the Canadian Shield...

AQ: Our plants are in danger of drowning right now; have moved some of the potted plants under the eaves to protect them from any frost.

Lindybird: Had big laugh at image of you scraping your pizza off the floor - I'm a firm believer in keeping our immune systems challenged!! :-))  I shall be tuned in to the Oscars from the silly "red-carpet arrivals" pre-show all the way to the final curtain call, although I must confess to shouting a lot at the telly during the entire show. I think The King's Speech will do OK; Colin Firth was nominated last year for A Single Man but didn't get it; think he stands a good chance this time round (and if he doesn't get it, you'll hear me yelling at the telly all the way to the UK)!!

Margobird: Your sister sounds like a real gem.

OG: So glad you had a chance to make various plans with son.

dibnlib: "My fried egg has landed upside down on the floor?"  Maybe that happens a lot in Russia?  :-))

Hi to all I missed. Have a lovely Sunday!

  • george g  Wonderful news! I'm sure Diesel will transform your life and I wish you both many happy years together. He is very handsome and that picture looks as if he is watching the house for any sign of his new, kind 'partner' - I was going to say 'master' but i believe the dog/human relationship is a partnership.

  • Alan Thanks for the news about the osprey sighted at Kincraig - won't be long now!

Annette My 2 sisters and I also always had Clarks shoes, despite a serious lack of 'wealth' in our household.  An unmarried aunt of my mother lived with us.  She was a retired teacher with a tiny pension but I believe she 'helped out' financially when things got too difficult.  We. too, had our feet x-rayed - absolutely taboo now!

Diane You are so organised, and how wise to have all the important stuff ready to lift in an emergency.

Did anyone in the UK see a programme called Extraordinary Dogs last evening?  It included an item about a German Shepherd which guided the Alaska State Troopers to the remote home of its owners, where there was a serious fire.  We certainly don't understand the brains and intelligence of the creatures with which we share the Earth.

  • Hi, Patriciat! I agree. I don't like the word master. Wonderful that Diesel has found such a good home. Hope everything is good with you and you have a good day! Thanks for your kind post to me.

  • Morning all,

Thanks for all the latest chat and links and pics.

Weather is dull and duller this morning. Temp is 3.9c. Not sure what is happening this morning but I expect shopping is included somewhere in the proceedings.

Appio & Vergine now have 3 eggs and Aria & Vento now have 2.

    Ospreys early at Maryland watchpoint:

  • Morning all, I am taking a couple of days off work this week and next while OH is “down south” visiting his mother, who recently had a very small stroke. Yesterday was sunny but we seemed to be surrounded by a bank of fog, today is gloomy.

Good for you George, for keeping Diesel. His pic is lovely, that’s my favourite colour for spaniels (except when I’m talking to the Thunderdog of course).

Wow, Diane, I can’t imagine putting stitches into someone else’s hand, let alone my own, you clever girl!  Hope it mends ok. Later: I see it’s doing well and you are very organised with your official docs and first aid training.

AQ, “waist bags, previously known as bum bags” LOL!

    OG, banoffee meringue roulade...YUMMM

Annette, lucky you for the whale sighting, have a good season.  I don’t remember having feet x-rayed, maybe they stopped doing it about then.

    Terry in Cumbria

  • Frosty early – a bit slow warming up – sun showing through thin cloud right now.  Been freezing stuff from yesterday’s shopping trip and other domestic jobs.  Waiting around for a delivery we missed yesterday – hope to get outside later.

New Minister gets ordained and inducted tonight – not going as we find those “official” occasions very unspiritual, and don’t particularly want to get shoved around at the “bun-fight” after.  Does everyone know that expression?  We always take it for granted, but one time when Son moved he worried a member of his employing church by saying he was organising a bun-fight!

Annette – pleased visit to Miss Molly went well with food offerings!  I expect the ranch lady was glad of a human ear rather than telling it all to the horses!

Diane – pleased that you had no more traumatic occurrences, and to read that the creek is where it belongs, your ear is recovering and your hand is healing – less risk of infection with each day that passes.  You are certainly well prepared for emergencies – with equipment, knowledge and expertise – well done!  The begonias are mixed pastel shades – which will almost certainly include some of the apricot coloured ones – they are not the heavy large-flowered varieties, but smaller and more delicate.

Patricia – I so agree with the dog/person partnership – as illustrated by your four!  I hope you are managing some good walks in the improved weather – without too much pain from your arthritis.

Alan - have a nice day – despite the shopping!

Terry – always good to “see” you on your days off.  I hope your OH didn’t find too bad a situation at his Mother’s.  Wouldn’t say thank you for banoffee anything myself, so pleased OH can have that sort of creamy stuff when we are out – although he was surprised at nuts in the meringue without them being mentioned (not allergic, just doesn’t like them).  Looked across from Annan shore on Saturday - near the old viaduct – but didn’t spot you between the single mast and the net of masts!

EDIT - meant to say - I am old enough that my early shoes came from the local cobbler's shop - no xray machine there, but he and his wife knew how to measure and fit!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Good morning TerryM sorry to read about your OH's mother, hope she will make a good recovery.  Hope you are going to have some me times now you have a couple of days off.

Started off very gloomy here this morning but the sun is out now but it is very cold, the wind nearly cuts you in two.  We were spoilt with the milder weather of last week but this is just a reminder that winter is not over yet.  Frost is forecast for tonight.

  • Good morning Alan  from a very chilly Poole although the sun is out now.  Couldn' t believe how cold it was when I was out fillling the bird feeders earlier.  Thanks for egg news, all starting to happen now and also for the link to Maryland watchpoint.

Hope shopping mission if it happens goes well.  How is Hamish getting along now.

    Margobird

  • Diane how wonderfully organised you are.  So pleased that your hand is OK and you are generally feeling a lot better.  Good news about the creek being back to its original level and you did not suffer any wind damage.  Had to smile when I pictured you injecting oranges but I believe this is what medical students do anyway.

  • Good morning patriciat they do measure a young childrens' feet in a different way now thank goodness.they jsut put their foot in a gauge and slide the thing up to get the size and then measure width with a tape measure so much safter all round.  I missed that programme after trying to remind myself that it was on.  I always think animals do have brains and intelligence, more than us at times.
