Tracking Rothes and Mallachie

I am not sure if we should have separate threads for Rothes and Mallachie. If people feel we should the best start them right away.

The first data has been published on Google Earth and immediately it is amazing how much further Rothes has flown that Mallachie.

Sadly my sense of humour has been misunderstood.

My comment about the earth still being flat was meant to convey

1.I  am a luddite with an ironic sense of humour

2 I can't get google earth to work for me

I get as far as putting in the name of a file and putting in the link then I am stuck..

Nothing happens when I click browse or view

OK, that's my sense of humour failure, for which I apologise...!

We have some instructions on how to follow the ospreys in Google Earth. Here are some additional screengrabs which I hope will help.

    1. Launch the Google Earth software

    2. Go to the Add menu (see below) and choose Network Link...

Another window pops up (see below).

    3. Enter 'Loch Garten Ospreys' in the Name field

    4. Paste the following address: http://www.rspb.org.uk/kml/lochgartenospreys.kml into the Link field

    5. Click OK (not Browse or View).

Let me know if that doesn't work and I'll try to help.

Thanks for the new info but I still cannot do it!!  The dialog box I get when I click Add does not give me the ok button at the bottom, I can put in all the other info but am not able to confirm it.  I have got the latest version of Google Earth, please help!

Could it be that this box opens close to the bottom of your screen.  If this is the case, you could try  moving    your cursor to the blue band at the top of that box, holding down the left mouse button and moving the  box up a little.  That is the only thing I can think of that could be the cause of you not seeing the OK button.  I  hope this works for you.

If what Kathy J suggested doesn't work for you, just use the <Enter> key on your keyboard.  By default, <OK>  is selected, so this will work for you.

  • Hi! This (i think) is the first time I've posted (am a regular on the other side) so HELLO!

Just thought I'd report that my parents are currently on a cruise ship on La Gironde river heading towards Bordeaux!  I really hope that they see Rothes (unlikely because it looks a huge river) but they've got the best chances of all of us! If I was on board, i'd put a message on a tannoy and change all scheduled excursions and go osprey hunting..... :)

  • Hi Evelyn H!  Thanks for your info, & its fun to think of all the passengers possibly rushing to one side of the cruise ship & making it rock around! Can you contact your parents (by mobile or text or something) to tell them all to have a good look out!

  • mallachie left the nest at 11.38 am on Saturday 29 August.  Last location Northumberland north of Amble and Alnmouth. Good fishing areas

  • Hooray Carol. Just what I want to hear. I've done the 'flying' thing with Mallachie on GE but would like to know how I place a Flag at her current location in Northumberland. Is anyone able to help?

This is where we miss the notifications, right?

Tiger - replying to your OP above, now that Mallachie too has set out (at last!) perhaps we should have a separate thread for each of them - it would be clearer, and there doesn't seem much point now, in comparing what they are doing.

A lot of info currently gets posted in the Diary Comments, but once that Diary entry is no longer current, it's hard to trace - it might be useful to have it in a dedicated ongoing thread. I don't know if there are any schools planning to follow R&M's journeys, but this could be a good approach from their viewpoint?

Before doing anything, I'll wait and see how people respond. I've become a bit of a fan of Rothes, who seems to be an osprey with taste, so if this idea seems a good one, I'll have a go at setting up a "Rothes' Journey" thread and outlining "the story so far".

This current thread has been used by quite a lot of people to post queries/hints and tips about using Google Earth, so maybe it would be a good idea to continue using it for that purpose?

    Comments welcome,

    Sue

  • Hello Tiger, Sue

I think this page is an excellent idea but I would like news and information concerning the girls to be together just because it can be so frustrating when the pages are so slow to load. I'd find myself having to have numerous browsers open to make sure I was loading as few pages as possible. To-ing and fro-ing from Rothes to  Mallachie I think I'd find 'hard work'.

It's only my opinion of course, I'm happy to follow the majority.

  • re: Mallachie moves on, but Rothes seems settled....-->

Mallachie has flown from close by RAF Boulmer to close by RAF Lemming. Maybe she just likes the sound of the jets as they remind her of her nest and the tornados that used to scream by.
