I am not sure if we should have separate threads for Rothes and Mallachie. If people feel we should the best start them right away.
The first data has been published on Google Earth and immediately it is amazing how much further Rothes has flown that Mallachie.

Emma: While 'we', well most of us, have been vexing over Rothes wanderings....I was surprised to measure her 'as the crow flies' distance is about 1030 miles, from the start to this morning. One third of the oft quoted 3000 mile migration. It has just occurred to me to look up Dr Jones' phone number, because he may have a visitor before long...... Sturgeon farm in the Gironde...remember? I wonder if he ever did market the Osprey Caviar brand?

LG 7 days; RW & SWT nil; LDOP varies
Oh yes I do remember jsb :) You are right, he might well have a visitor before long...Its really interesting watching her route, although sometimes vexing as you say. Great to have a fix on her position on the same day. Lets see what tomorrow reveals.
JSB Thank you for the map. Rothes is making progress but I cannot help feeling it is still odd. Good that she is not likely to be going hungry.
Hopefully there will be a report from LG later on Rothes' progress.
I reckon the explanation for her zigzag course on June 7th/8th is that she was flying into strong headwinds. I was looking at the current weather during that time, and the wind was invariably from the north and usually over 20 mph. To me, her course looks like that of a sailing ship beating to windward.
The wind hasn't improved much over the last few days - on GE, it's currently N18 mph at Laayoune & Es Semara - but the course she now needs to follow is roughly ENE, so not directly into it.
This is a more detailed site (for wind surfers) giving wind forecasts for Morocco.
Richard Thaxted's new blog today promises an update on Rothes movements tomorrow (Tuesday 14th)
Thanks AG. I keep thinking one day I will click on this thread and Rothes will have picked up a "tail wind" and be almost home. :)

Well one young bird showed how easy it could be. See Belle 2010
Update from Richard as a post under his blog of yesterday
Rothes up-date: No mega movements from her. From 1:00 pm on 9-6-2011 to 13:00 12-6-2011
453 miles (725 km) total distance, 280 miles (447 km) east into the very northern corner of Mauritania, a somewhat arid region. Following a river perhaps? Can't access Google Earth right now, so looking in my old school atlas! Hardly a detailed scale.
No change on GE yet, probably this evening for an update.
Google Earth has now been updated but I have no time to do a capture.
