Weekly Chat, Sunday, January 30,2011

What ho everyone! Lazy day for the most part - girding myself for the busy week ahead - oh for a week with no appointments, no projects, no visitors - but as they, say 'be careful what you wish for.'    Several folks added pix of Lily, Phoebe, and anonymous eagles on the last page or two of the previous thread, plus some quickie posts to wind up the week (AQ may have melted by the time you read this).   In the meantime, here's wishing Andy Murray the best at the Australian Open - it'll be over by the time I wake up.

Have a good Sunday all.

  • Hey Diane: Is the storm that's forecast for you the one that zipped by here today? Or is it coming from down south?  Incidentally, have you checked out the Wundermap on the Weather Underground site?  Do hope it's all hype and not much ice. Stay safe.

Driving back with grandson this afternoon, saw the most wonderful rainbow - actually a double rainbow, but the base of the main one was more vibrant and colorful than any rainbow I've ever seen!  People were pulling over on the highway to get out and take photos, videos or just gawk. Most amazing. Even typically unimpressed grandson was impressed.  We kept thinking we'd drive through the base of it as we headed down the road and it seemed to be just in front of the next stand of trees, the next hill, etc., but when we got to that spot on the road, it had moved!  Clearly was "moving" as we drove and as we saw the suns rays reflected, but it was fascinating. Never seen anything like it.

Here's a link to a local (well, SoCal) story about a wild eagle that's been visiting a captive eagle (apparently with an eye problem that precludes its being released into the wild) at the Orange County Zoo.  http://sciencedude.ocregister.com/2011/01/25/newest-visitor-to-o-c-zoo-a-wild-bald-eagle/120112/

  • Hey, Annette. That double rainbow sounds awe inspiring. I always like to see rainbows. I look forward to reading the eagle story. Thanks!

The projected storm is the one that rolled through your area. But it's going to sweep into the south and drive all that moisture from that big southern storm up here. Then all that moisture is going to hit the snow storm that's coming in from the north. So they can't predict what will happen -- depends on the temps. They sure have their knickers in a twist, though.

  • Morning Everyone, and Happy Beginning to the week.  Cold and frosty here, but we are promised warmer temps by tonight, with lots more  r a i n  ... ugh.

Here is today's Monday Smile to cheer us up:  this week they are weird and wonderful signs from around the world.

    Have a good day!

  • LYNETTE Mums day centre reopened mid Jan so she has been able to go there 2 days a week again. We will just have to wait and see what Spring brings. Sorry to hear about your Mum. It is so hard but Bro seems to take it in his stride. After a long career in computers (Nimrod simulator his speciality) he now woks for Alzheimers Scotland p/t and for early stages clients, so work helps him deal with Mum and Mum with work.

WENDY love the pic of daughters dog, obviously looking intently to where owner was last seen!

  • Just looked at Annettes link to the wild Bald Eagle pics and short film - how good that this bird is feeling like a visit now and then!  Your story of the double rainbow sounds just awe inspiring.  Glad you had someone with you to share that moment with.

Diane:  If the bad weather is coming, hold on tight!  Hope you are OK during the crisis and that your power stays on.

They are playing Movie tunes on the radio,  James Bond themes and the like, from the late composer and arranger, John Barry, whose death has just been announced.  What a legacy he has left.  We particularly liked the theme to Dances with Wolves.

  • LINDY like the Monday funnies. I don't have pics but in Nairobi saw a sign above crocodile pit, "Anyone dropping litter in here will be asked to retrieve it"   At a large open air market outside Edinburgh sign "Childrens Creche" pointing to a drain- ok maybe not that funny- and at the same place a mock up of a soldier with gun signed "Crowd Control"

So sorry we did not have camera on journey to Mums as the scenery was at its best with briliant blue sky above a mist and the ridge peaks above the mist covered with snow. People were stopped in lots of laybys with cameras, no doubt they got some wonderful pics.

DIANE  the site shows 2 original owl paintings, one is longer than high and one higher than long. Ours is the second and is shown under the heading Edinburgh Exhibition 2009. Both very similar. I am sure he could post the other to you in Indianapolis if you really want it!!!!!!!

  • Lindy  thank you for the Monday laughs.

Wendy - thank you for the pictures. 5 months until I can see it for myself so they're a real treat.

  •

Mrs Sparrowhawk's here again waiting for a poor unsuspecting feeder visitor.  A goldfinch just arrived but thankfully left again quickly. The only other bird in sight is a bluetit in the hedge.

  • Good morning all just a quick visit from me.  Tried to post yesterday afternoon but had no luck.  Freezing cold with a hard frost again but unlike yesterday when we had sun all day, it is cloudy and warmer temperatures and rain forecast for this week.   Once a year I have my cooker just about stripped apart and given a good clean, he is due to come around 10 and after he has gone will be getting a visit from my sister who will be bringing Rhys down to see me.  She looks after him every Monday and even though she is tired when he goes home thoroughly enjoys having him to herself.

Lindybird thanks for the Monday Smiles, always enjoy them.    What a cute little boy Tomazs is they are just lovely photographs.  Good to see that your son witll not have to relocate for his new job.    Hope your OH will feel better soon and also that he doesn't share it with you.

dibnlob sorry to read that your Mum is deteriorating further.  So sad when you see your parents going downhill like this.  Saw my Mum go rapidly down in her later years and was quite upsetting to see her.  With my Dad it was very sudden but nonetheless distressing.  It is good that your brother is so near and has an understanding of her situation.  Perhaps brighter weather will help a bit..  Your cousin has a lot to withstand but it is good that she still remains bright and cheerful.

origninal goldfinch  hope all that sneezing is not a cold but it is an allergy you find out eventually what you are allergic to.  Nice picture of your grand-daughter, nice big puddle too but at least she was complete with wellies.

Wendyb beautiful photographs taken on your walk, pleased you managed to stay upright and love the picture of your daughter's dog in all that snow that Dorset had.  I think that must be the record so far this year for post taking a long time to arrive.  It does make you wonder where it has been.

ALICAT great news about your baby fish.  They should be safe now separated from the others.

Lynette as always thanks for your pics.  If I could get the hang of screen shots I would be just the same.  I have got as far as taking a pic but as yet no idea of how to post on the blog but will keep trying.

Diane  I hope you do not get power cuts with the bad weather you have talked about looming.

Annette thanks for the link to the story about the bald headed eagle.  Nice film of it and I like the music as well.

Sorry to those I have not mentioned but hope you are all OK.

I was disappointed with the tennis.  Have to say that Andy really went into melt down.  He must be gutted to have played so badly after playing so well.  Novak played really well and was a deserved winner and I too thought that his speech was very good.  Andy seems more at ease giving interviews now and I am sure his time will come and he will win a Grand Slam.

We did the bird count between 9.15 and 10.15 and saw everything we usually see and even saw a thrush which has been around again this morning.  I think the numbers will be about the same as last year.  The starlings were not in as much evidence as they usually are but we still had 20 in, along with a robin, our pied wagtail male and female, blackbird and many sparrows but less dunnocks.  Will be very interesting to see the results to see what birds suffered during all the cold and snow we have had.

Now for a Billy update - he kept us very amused on Sunday.  Was in our garden most of the day, moving round with the sun.  He just loves the sun and for a long time was rolling round on our patio, having a good wash and then went to sleep.  As the sun went round he followed it and I looked out of our bedroom window early afternoon and there he was curled up in a big flower tub fast asleep.  We haven't got  round to emptying the plants out if so he had a nice soft bed to curl up on.  Stayed there for nearly 2 hours and not seeming to worry about us looking at him.  He didn't even run away when we were watching him through the conservatory window.  OH said he had it made, all the food and milk he wants and the bonus of basking in the sunshine.  Sun not shining today but we did see him having an early breakfast at about 6.30.
