Thanks for the report from RW and the pics, Alan. Great news that 09(98) seems to have paired up with 5N ,it bodes well for next year and the future. It will be fascinating to see how they get on with the tagging of the two adult males. Catching specific adult males is not easy - I wonder if they'll get help from a certain someone who has plenty of experience in these matters!
Three rapidly growing chicks in MB. Mrs 5R is feeding them from yet another big fish:
Yet another 2 year-old back at RW. 06(09) in Manton Bay.
After posting the news about the new arrival at MB I went to RW to see if he was still there, but unfortunately he had already flown elsewhere. On arriving in Waderscrape Hide I was informed that 5R had been away for some time so a fish delivery was imminent. Sure enough within 5 minutes an osprey was spotted in the distance with a huge wriggling fish dangling from its' talons! 5R landed on the perch with the fish and started to eat the head. I decided to walk to Shallow Water Hide for a better view and as soon as I got there the heavens opened for a 5 minute cloudburst. 5R took the enormous fish and landed on the fallen tree in order to get a bit more shelter. As soon as the rain eased he took off, presumably to deliver the monster to the nest, and promptly dropped it in the water!!
Unsurprisingly Mrs 5R was extremely unimpressed with all this and soon her cries for food were echoing around the bay and poor old 5R was away for yet another fishing mission.
Thanks for the News Sandy; do we know the parents of 06(09)?
From Sue C's sheets 00 & 01 were from site B & 03 & 04 from site N. But I think the only other information I remember was that Rutland said 30(05) had produced 2 chicks & another nest (parents not named) had fledged 3 young.
Hi Vespa, I'm not sure which of the other 2 nests 06(09) came from and those volunteers who were on duty yesterday didn't know either. 2009 was the first year that these 2 nests were recorded so it's great news that at least one of them has reared a returning youngster from their first brood.
Fish delivery at MB (intact fish with head on, 5R wasn't going to drop this one!):

06(09) definately came from one of the 'secret' nests.
Account of 06(09)'s return (he is 03's grandson, coming from Site O).
