Well, what devastating news to start the new-look forum pages.
I'm afraid I cannot find the words right now to express my true feelings at this tragic event. As many of you are aware 08(97) is the very first osprey that I ever saw and for many reasons will forever remain my favourite.
Born in Scotland in 1997 he was removed from the nest and taken to Rutland Water as part of the ambitious relocation project. He was the first of the released birds to return to RW and became the first male osprey to hold a territory in central England for 150 years. Choosing Manton Bay as his preferred site he became a legend at RW as he returned year after year but failed to attract a mate. Then in the summer of 2006 he finally paired up with 5N(04) and the following year they successfully reared two chicks to fledging. After an unsuccessful season in 2008 the pair relocated to a private site (site N) away from the reserve and have raised chicks in the last two seasons. 5N is currently incubating the last of 08's progeny.
RIP 08(97) 1997-2011. Goodbye old friend.
Sandy it is both devastating and sickening news. So sad as he was clearly very special to you and this will definitely cause many problems now for the osprey family left behind and the team at Rutland. What a heartfelt 'obituary' you have given him. Hugs to you.
Meanwhile, it's a lovely evening in Manton Bay:
Another Site B Osprey returns!!!! This time it's 01/09 a male chick.
Oh Sandy - I have just read your post & tears are tripping me! I know exactly how you feel! Has body been found? Hope you have a successful hatch & 5N manages to look after any chicks but I know how difficult it will be
Best wishes

One Life - Live It!!
5N is continuing to accept fish from the Rutland team in the absence of 08/97 & they are hopefull that she will hatch the eggs. They have a licence to intervene if required.
Also more detals on the return of 01/09.
