31 March Blue LJ2 returns

1 April Blue 372 briefly visits, 6 April Blue 372 returns and stays

Sadly, Blue LM6 has not returned

Eggs laid

#1 April 23 - 17.40, #2 April 26 - 19.28, #3 April 29 - 15.46

Hatched

June 2 - 00.52, June 4 - 09.48?  It is not known for certain which eggs these are. My thoughts are these are eggs 2 and 3 and egg number 1 did not hatch. (Left unattended on a frosty night)

However, the consensus among the volunteers is that it is eggs 1 & 2 which have hatched. Llyn Benig is around 1000 feet above sea level so the ambient temperature is around 2 degrees Celsius lower than at sea level which might account for longer hatching times. It has certainly been a cold hatching period. (AG)

RESUMÉ for JUNE 2024

This has been a month of fast change. Two chicks were born at the beginning of the month. On chick 1’s day of hatching, someone was flying a drone in the area and it spooked 372. She alarm called and quickly left the nest with the little chick being thrown to the nest edge as she left. Somehow that wee one had the instinct and strength to move back to the nest cup and safety again.  372 has proven to be a great first time mother. She has gently fed the chicks, given them warmth and shelter and LJ2 has provided well with a variety of daily  fish. There have been the usual intruders which has distracted LJ2 at times from bringing in fish but he would always bring some later on. The chicks are now 4 weeks old and developing very well. There is a hierarchy between the chicks with #1 being dominant over #2, mostly at feeding times. #2 knows to allow #1 to feed first then it’ll get its turn. Gelert KA9(22) son of LJ2 and LM6, was photographed at Dyfi 3 weeks after his visit here on 25 May.

  • Morning Glider and thanks for all the updates.  Fantastic coverage :-)

Brilliant capture seeing Emrys take the fish from 372 on the tree.    Just proves that the juveniles are fed off the nest.

  • 12 August

Good morning. Emrys stayed the night on the nest, leaving at 04.55.

    05.52 372 arrived to collect a fish from LJ2

05.53 Bethan flew on to take the fish from 372.

05.57 Bethan left with the fish.

    06.15 Emrys paid a visit.

06.23 372 had just brought a stick when Bethan flew back with her half eaten fish.

06.24 Emrys joined them and Bethan tucked into her fish.

Thanks Karen, yeah it was good that the PTZ cam was able to catch that. It’s much better than seeing it all in miniature from the nest cam!

  • Everyone arrived for LJ2’s next delivery.

08.07 Emrys needs to work on his landings, ending up on 372’s tail.

LJ2 arrived with a small fish.

    08.07 372 mantles over it.

08.10 Bethan watches from behind as Emrys is getting fed from 372.

08.28 Bethan can wait no longer and barges in between the two to take the fish.

    08.35 Bethan tucking in.

    08.39 Finishing off now.

  • More fish arrive.

09.58 LJ2 with another. It’s bigger than the first two.

    Bethan arrives first

    09.59 then Emrys.

10.00 Rather than taking the fish, Emrys asks to be fed.

10.04 LJ2 leaves with the fish.

10.35 Bethan chose to stay on the nest and is rewarded a short while later with a fine headless fish from 372.

    Bethan now has the fish.

10.36 LJ2 then brings his fish back.

Bethan has both fish beside her. Emrys is calling to 372 to be fed. LJ2 steps off his fish.

10.38 Emrys is still calling to 372. I don’t know if he can see the second fish?

    10.39 Emrys clocks the fish

He moves in to take it.

    10.41 They’re both happily eating.

  • 10.59 Emrys finished eating first and left the nest, without the fish.

Emrys left a few seconds after, with her fish.

12.12 The fish was still laying on the nest when Emrys returned and he started eating it.

12.16 He was joined by 372 who had brought in a long stick, then LJ2 for a short while.

12.21 Emrys left, again without the fish.

    12.30 LJ2 collected the fish.

  • 14.38 372 came to the nest fish calling.

Emrys, who was on the tower perch, joined in calling.

15.17 Aww Emrys you handsome boy. Two hearts

16.40 372 has been in and off the nest fish calling this afternoon.

17.52 And our beautiful Bethan has been calling too. Two hearts

19.18 The youngsters have been on the nest together a couple of times.

19.24 They’re both calling for fish.

    19.53 They’ve settled down now.

  • 20.11 LJ2 arrives with what looks like a jack pike.

One of the juvies takes the fish and mantles over it.

20.12 Of course it’s Bethan who got it! Emrys is vocalising.

20.16 Emrys watches closely as Bethan eats.

20.23 When Bethan picks up the fish in her beak, Emrys takes his chance to snatch it.

There’s not much left, just the tail end.

Emrys takes it to the other side to eat.

20.27 And that’s the final piece getting swallowed now.

20.29 Emrys looking for fish down below.

    They lie down together again.

20.34 It’s Emrys who gets up first when 372 arrives with a fish.

    He takes it from her.

Emrys lunged at 372 a few times to warn her she was standing too close.

20.35 She moved back then flew off.

20.56 Bethan waits as Emrys eats.

21.12 Emrys releases the fish and flies off.

Bethan goes straight to the fish.

21.38 She eats for just under half an hour

then tries to shake the fish from her talons.

It was still caught in her talons when she flew off.

Nobody is sleeping on the nest tonight.
