RESUMÉ FOR MAY 2024

The new couple’s relationship has continued to grow. They have worked hard together to maintain and strengthen their nest, bringing in new materials daily. Both birds have been catching fish and sharing these with each other. They have also shared incubation and developed strategies to get each other off the eggs when needed! They have also defended their nest from intruders, the most traumatic being when Blue 432, Eshells, a 3 year old returner from Kielder visited on the 9th of May.. Blue 372 fought hard to keep her place on the nest as she was continually chased and dive bombed in Blue 432’s bid to oust her. The eggs were left unattended for around 3 1/2 hours. Luckily it was a warm evening so hopefully no damage done. The most exciting visit came from dear KA9 (22), Gelert, son of LJ2 and LM6 when he arrived on the morning of the 25th of May. It was a short visit as he was soon ushered away by LJ2.

  • 21.34 Both chicks stayed with mum for a feed.

21.39 LJ2 has started on his fish.

21.43 #1 has retired , #2 continues to be fed.

21.45 #2 has retired as well

    21.49 LJ2 and 372 enjoy a feed together, such a rare occurrence.

  • Both adults finished off their perch although #1 chick had got a few pieces from dad.

When 372 left for a comfort break, LJ2 picked up the first fish that had been abandoned when the 2nd one arrived.

He transferred it to his talons

After 372 returned, LJ2 started eating the fish on the nest.

    23.05 He continued to eat

22.24 And left once he was satisfied.

It’s difficult to see but there should be some fish left on the nest for the chicks in the morning.

    16.23 Again a hidden feed.

16.29 #2 cowers away to the side with #1 leaning over with open beak.

Perhaps #2 was getting too much fish?

#1 made sure it got the rest.

16.37 Feed finished, #2 hasn’t moved. The water’s pretty choppy today, not ideal fishing conditions.
