RESUMÉ FOR MAY 2024

The new couple’s relationship has continued to grow. They have worked hard together to maintain and strengthen their nest, bringing in new materials daily. Both birds have been catching fish and sharing these with each other. They have also shared incubation and developed strategies to get each other off the eggs when needed! They have also defended their nest from intruders, the most traumatic being when Blue 432, Eshells, a 3 year old returner from Kielder visited on the 9th of May.. Blue 372 fought hard to keep her place on the nest as she was continually chased and dive bombed in Blue 432’s bid to oust her. The eggs were left unattended for around 3 1/2 hours. Luckily it was a warm evening so hopefully no damage done. The most exciting visit came from dear KA9 (22), Gelert, son of LJ2 and LM6 when he arrived on the morning of the 25th of May. It was a short visit as he was soon ushered away by LJ2.

  • June 23

Good morning. Not the nicest of starts to the day. LJ2 had been fishing though and caught his breakfast.
06.42 Once finished, he brought the headless fish to the nest. Yes, there are 4 ospreys and a fish in this snap!

372 took the fish and the chicks had a feed.

  • 07.04 LJ2 took the fish for a second feed and returned a short while after. He gave a feed to #2 chick.

    07.14

07.15 372 then came over and took over the feed. It finished at 07.24.

  • 372 has been on and off the nest. She’s been doing a lot of preening too.

The chicks are still hidden under the rain splodges on the lens.

372 has been calling for the next fish. Her undercarriage looks wet. She may have had a dip in the water.

Current scene on the nest, 372 still meticulously preening those long feathers.
11.21 The chicks are almost visible.

  • Yay, full visibility on the nest! Raised hands
11.58 372 started fish calling as she saw LJ2 incoming. The chicks were sat up.

Next thing the chicks pancaked as LJ2 approached.

Were they worried he’d drop the fish on them like he did with the stick last night?! Laughing

11.58 372 quickly collected the fish and started the feed.

    12.15

12.23 372 swallowed the tail and the feed was finished. #1 got the lions share but #2 did get some too.

  • 19.14

Another wee feed from the fish.

Afterwards when 372 is finishing it off LJ2 arrives and wants some.

19.38 He pulls it from 472’s talons.

19.39 but she wants it back and grabs one end with her beak.

LJ2 pulls harder and quickly swallows the piece of skin that was left.
