RESUMÉ FOR MAY 2024

The new couple’s relationship has continued to grow. They have worked hard together to maintain and strengthen their nest, bringing in new materials daily. Both birds have been catching fish and sharing these with each other. They have also shared incubation and developed strategies to get each other off the eggs when needed! They have also defended their nest from intruders, the most traumatic being when Blue 432, Eshells, a 3 year old returner from Kielder visited on the 9th of May.. Blue 372 fought hard to keep her place on the nest as she was continually chased and dive bombed in Blue 432’s bid to oust her. The eggs were left unattended for around 3 1/2 hours. Luckily it was a warm evening so hopefully no damage done. The most exciting visit came from dear KA9 (22), Gelert, son of LJ2 and LM6 when he arrived on the morning of the 25th of May. It was a short visit as he was soon ushered away by LJ2.

  • Unseen intruder around.

LJ2 came to the nest, 372 thought she’d then take a break. However, LJ2 started chipping

    10.37

10.40 After a few minutes of chipping, LJ2 started flapping as well.

     .

10.44 as he saw 372 flying in, LJ2 left.

10.45 372 soon lay on the chicks

  • 19.42 372 takes a minute’s comfort break. Close up of bobs and egg.

    19.46 372 looking relaxed, preening.

20.09 She gets up and grasps the fish, pecking at it a couple of times then releases it again, deciding not to have a feed.

20.10 She has a leg and wing stretch before settling back on the bobs.

21.34 372 pulls the fish to the side of the nest.

21.35 However, she just has a small feed herself

21.37 then returns to the bobs.

21.42 LJ2 takes the fish off the nest.

21.54 He returns, flapping his outstretched wings when landing.

    He then starts mantling

    and 372 begins chipping

22.03 A few minutes after, 372 takes the fish from LJ2.

    22.04 She is still vigilant

    22.05 she eats quickly

22.07 the bobs get some too.

  • June 9

Good morning. Although 372 had last night’s fish on the nest with her all night, it wasn’t until LJ2 brought in a fresh one in the morning that the bobs got a feed.

06.02 LJ2 arrives with a small fresh fish. Last night’s fish is to the left of 372.

    06.03

06.05 After starting the fish herself, 372 began to feed the bobs.

06.06 however, it soon became clear that #1 bob at the front, was getting all of the feed.

    06.10

    06.11

06.12 #2 bob got a token piece as 372 was clearing up the scraps.

06.47 LJ2 had collected the fish and then returned with it a short while later.

06.53 372 showed no interest so LJ2 started eating it on the nest.

He began offering a few pieces to 372, who blanked him. I remember him trying this with LM6 as well.

    06.54

06.56 372 decided to take the fish.

06.57 This time, #2 bob got more of the feed. #1’s crop was quite full.

  • 07.52 LJ2 has been back and forth to the nest, taking fish off, returning with them.

    08.19

It wasn’t until 09.44 that 372 began another feed, retrieving last night’s leftover which LJ2 had eaten some of on the nest earlier.

09.47 The view of the feed was blocked by 372.

    09.49

    09.53

    09.54 feed finished

    09.55

    10.03 She’s looking tired.

10.20 She snoozes on and off

10.29 LJ2 returns and picks up last night’s leftover fish

10.30 He begins to eat it. 372 is calling

10.40 she gets up and walks towards LJ2

then decides to take a comfort break, leaving LJ2 on the nest with the bobs.

10.41 372 returns with a couple of wee sticks.

10.42 LJ2 leaves as 372 is settled over the bobs.

16.07 I think fishing conditions have been tricky with the wind and rain. However, LJ2 brought in a small live fish late afternoon.

372 still had what was left of last night’s fish on the nest.

16.08 She opted to take the fresh one instead and started a feed for the bobs.

16.10 In the meantime, LJ2 picked up last night’s fish and started eating it on the nest.

    16.11

16.16 372 had stopped her feed so the bobs turned to dad.

He duly fed them from his fish.

    16.17

    16.18

16.19 372 cosied up the bobs and LJ2 continued eating.

16.44 he’s down to the tail fin now.

16.45 LJ2 decides to stop, flying off with possibly the tail fin and some moss.
