Asha & Brodie

The partnership has matured this season, with Asha continuing her good female role (and she loves nest-building) and Brodie being more reliable, both fishing and incubating.

The pair have fought their way thru all kinds of nasty weather - snow, wind and rain - and intruders, including the dreaded KL5 Klive, have been a nuisance but not dangerous...

so far.

EDIT

********

Sadly, the month of May heralded irresistible aggression from BlueKL5 "Klive", who had ruined the end of last season for the 2 juvies.

Within the first 2 days Klive had driven Brodie from the area (tho Brodie did return a couple of times to dive-bomb Klive, to no effect) and destroyed the eggs.  He commenced to woo Asha clumsily, selfishly and inappropriately, as can be seen from the following pages.

  • May 10, 2024 - Day complete

    Fish:  9:53:50 (KL5 on tree), 14:54:22 (Asha)

    Mating:  4:55 F, 6:06 F, 17:56 F.  All with KL5.

The (S)uccess or (F)ailure indication is purely my untrained observation.

    0 S, 3 F

  • KL5 flies to the nest at 13:41 empty handed.  He arrived on branch at 9:53 with a huge fish and ate it all himself.

Asha looked at his talons when he landed but not even a scrap of any fish.  He has a lot of nerve!

    Glider said:
I absolutely can’t tell the difference between Asha and Brodie

My weak joke misled you, - the snap shows the nearer bird shouting its head off, the farther bird not listening  - then I went and said that Klive had a mucky beak, which was nothing to do with anything except it spoilt his outline.

Altogether a poor job on my part, but I know you won't mind Kissing heart

  • 10 May 2024

04.19  Asha landed on the nest, looking around for KLive or Brodie.

04.20  Up to the nest perch, still looking around.

    04.21  Day cam on

04.55  KLive arrived, landing on her back – attempted mating.  Asha starts calling.

04.55  Klive goes up to the nest perch, ignoring Asha's persistent calls

05.26  Klive drops to the nest again, as Asha prowls around him, calling.

05.38  Klive flies up to the nest perch.  Asha becomes quiet!

    05.49  and starts calling again.

06.03  They looked quite companionable for a while, he on the nest perch, she on the nest, calling now and again.

06.04  Asha starts wandering. KLive has a poop and drops now on Asha's left shoulder.  She easily tips him off.

06.06  Another attempted mating, she tips him off again.

06.07  Asha flies to the cam perch

    06.23  KLive flew off

     06.06  Attempted mating

06:20     Andy Simkins     Asha stops food soliciting and moves to nest perch

    06:22 -  KL5 leaves

08.28.48    Asha has a lovely wing stretch on the cam perch

08.30  Aviemore ospreys reported KLive caught a fish at 08.30.

08:48  Asha dropped down from the cam perch, looking wary.  Begins to mantle and intruder chips, half-heartedly.  Then goes lower in the nest, mantling, chipping more loudly.

    08.51  She continues to chip

    08:52  Asha leaves

09.28  ENS until the staff start work, and they focus on a beautiful woodpigeon in the dead tree below the PTZ.  Focuses on the feather detail and the talons.  It's calling – the neck is ballooning!.

09.32  Back to the nest view.

09.54  Cam zooms in on KLive, with a HUGE fish on a bent over dead tree.  He is casually looking around.  Not eating.

09.55  KLive seen with fish on tree

10:01  Osprey (KL5??) the PTZ with a fish

10.42  Spider appears on the left of the screen.

10.46  Asha lands on the nest perch  Nest cam

11.03  Asha is preening on the nest perch – Zoom cam switches from KLive & his fish.

11:03  Asha watches, and drops to the nest, fish soliciting..  Asha cals, waits, prowls.

11.19  She continues to call, but not as insistently.  She watches, looking beyond the cam perch, and mantles quietly

11.20  Calling again, intermittently, ever hopeful.

11.45  She is still calling, looking towards the right of our screen, or towards up.

    13.03  Asha's call gets louder.

13.40  Asha is still on the nest.  KLive is still eating the fish on the bent tree.  I'm not too sure where this is.  Beyond the nest, but not in view of the cam, or behind the PTZ

13.41  KLive flies, and does a circle, passing left to right of the PTZ cam.

And lands on the nest, with no fish!!  Asha is distraught.  He has eaten that huge fish himself.  That's just not on KLive.  You won't win the lady like that.  Boy is she giving him an earful.

14.07  KLive is on the south rim, with Asha in the flat cup, yelling at him.

14.08  In disgust, she flies, calling as she does so.  KLive looks around for her.  "Oh where's she gone?"  "What's that for!".  Zoom stays on the nest.

14.09  Asha can still be heard calling for fish!

14.13  Zoom has a brief look around, then back to the nest, just to confirm it is KL5 Darvic on the nest.  Yes, it is.

14.40.33  Excellent close of up an unconcerned KLive.

14.48  KLive cleans his talons and stands looking around in the centre of the nest.

15.11  KLive is alert all of a sudden, and begins intruder chipping.  He opens his winds and then mantles.  Osprey flies in over the nest.

15.12  An unringed osprey flies over the nest and lands.  A dark chest.  Female?  KLive flaps her off.

    15.13  Continues intruder chipping.

  • HOLD THE FRONT PAGE!!  It's all been kicking off on the PTZ!

Before the unringed female, above, landed on the nest, and was seen off by  KLive, the PTZ showed Asha with a HUGE fish which she was eating on the tree beyond the nest, but doesn't show in nest cam.

After the unringed F had been sent packing I noticed she was on a tree beyond Asha's fish tree - three osprey in one shot.  Unringed F flew up and over Asha and 15.16 she flew over the nest.  KLive chipped and mantled.  By the clonk, she landed on cam perch.  KLive looked worried, but then flew up to cam perch and presumably saw her off.

Three osprey in a row!  KLive on the nest, Asha and her fish, and beyond her the new unringed F

15.17 KLive returned to the nest, having 'escorted' the female away.  Asha has mantled with her fish, and returned to the fish when the intruder had been despatched.

  • LOL, Wendy.  Once in a while, but I'm still fighting the internet so it's frustrating.  I need Mission Control's screen set up, not a tiddly laptop!  But I won't feel so guilty when I am away for a while!

  • You have no need to feel guilty as you contribute a great deal ... I mostly use a tablet as my laptop is recording Peregrine's nest, don't think I can handle multi laptops any more like I used to, honestly don't know how Scylla manages all those nests she reports on! Thinking

  • Continued

    16.18     KLive away

    16.56     KLive returned

17.52     KLive is fish calling!!  He wants Asha to come back with her fish, I think.

17.53     After a poop over the side of the nest, KLive has flown

17.58     He returns to the nest, with some chirrups and calls.

Asha is still on the tree beyond, with her fish.

18.31     KLive left the nest and landed on the lower branch of the tree immediately to the left of the nest

18.32     He flies to the branch above Asha

19.04     And there he remains, calling now and again.  What a hoot!

I think that's it from me for today.  KLive has had his just desserts this afternoon!  I hope he learns from it.
