It was a very welcomed surprise to see NC0 arrive back from her wintering grounds on the 8th March, her earliest return to date! NC0 kept herself occupied while alone - catching some impressive-sized fish to eat as well as preparing the nest in readiness for future eggs. To note, her severely split blue darvic ring (as seen last season) is missing and she now only wears a BTO ring on her right leg.
It was a nail-biting time for us waiting to see if dear Laddie would make an appearance too and, little did we know, that it would be a further 19 days before he made his ‘grand entrance’ on the 27th, being ‘escorted’ to the nest by a flock of very vocal gulls!
Having settled into their usual routines on the nest and around the reserve, we now look forward to watching this season’s events unfold.

27th April
Morning All,
Laddie has not come to the nest so far this morning

9:38 Laddie still hasn't made an appearance. NC0 has been relaxed and quiet
I'm out for the day but will try to check in when I can. BFN
10:35ish Laddie to the nest - no fish. NC0 off for a break
Edited in: Although NC0 did pop back to the nest a couple of times during Laddie's stint, she didn't incubate again until her return at 12:20 - Laddie had been chipping a couple of minutes prior to her landing
12:18 He got up and flapped his wings
Chipping
He settled back down but still on alert
12:20 Laddie flew off as soon as NC0 returned
Laddie delivered a whole fish to NC0 at 15:25
That’s good, NC0 would’ve been needing it.
She certainly did, Glider!
The cam had remained zoomed in on Laddie and, at 16:02, he rose from the eggs, flapped his wings and chipped
The cam panned out
He chipped some more
Then settled back down, no threat seen
NC0 was back to the nest at 16:04, she must have eaten her fish
She had to 'give him the foot' to prise him off the eggs
16:06 Laddie flew off
18:26 Laddie was back on alert at the nest
He chipped
Looked skyward, more chipping
Off he went at 18:28
I can't see that Laddie has been back to the nest since then
NC0 at present, 20:05
There were no more visits from Laddie
21:26 NC0, pre-night cam
She's asleep, 21:44
28th April
Laddie to the nest at 8:57 to relieve NC0 of her incubation duty. I've checked through and it was his first appearance this morning
He landed on the bark
NC0 was ready for her break
She flapped her wings
And off she went
Laddie watching NC0 (out of cam view)
She could then be seen heading to the birch where she landed
Laddie chipped, on occasion, from 9:44 to 9:47 - no threat seen and he remained incubating
10:20 NC0 calling from somewhere around the reserve, Laddie giving small chirps in reply
10:23 NC0 to the perch
