It was a very welcomed surprise to see NC0 arrive back from her wintering grounds on the 8th March, her earliest return to date! NC0 kept herself occupied while alone - catching some impressive-sized fish to eat as well as preparing the nest in readiness for future eggs. To note, her severely split blue darvic ring (as seen last season) is missing and she now only wears a BTO ring on her right leg.
It was a nail-biting time for us waiting to see if dear Laddie would make an appearance too and, little did we know, that it would be a further 19 days before he made his ‘grand entrance’ on the 27th, being ‘escorted’ to the nest by a flock of very vocal gulls!
Having settled into their usual routines on the nest and around the reserve, we now look forward to watching this season’s events unfold.

A mating attempt at 16:23
16:25 An intruder around? NC0 pancaked the nest
Laddie came back. He chipped
Laddie away at 16:28 - no threat seen
16:46 Laddie back to the nest with a clump of grass
Very soon after that, NC0 decided to do some crow chasing!
NC0 came back at 17:41 after spending some time on the birch
She spent a fair bit of time watching the area
At 17:52, she made (what sounded like) 7 human intruder alarm calls
Then flew off
18:31 It's been ENS since then
A fish delivery at 19:27. Seagulls had been 'sounding off' since 19:23 and bothering NC0 (who had been standing on the centre of the nest since 18:38). Perhaps they saw Laddie incoming with his fish!
NC0 took the fish to the back right of the nest
The seagulls were very noisy and flying around. NC0's reaction when one flew over
Both had to duck when this one flew from right to left above them
One flying over the Loch
It had quietened down somewhat when Laddie flew off
TBC
Cont'd...
NC0 waited for a short time before beginning to tuck in to her meal
She did take short pauses to look around in between eating
The wind began to pick up
Up to the back right edge of the nest...
...and flew off at 19:36
She flew over the birch
No sooner had NC0 disappeared from view, Laddie flew past the left side of the nest
He turned to make his way back to the nest
There was a single gull call when he landed
He looked around
Laddie was fixated on something for a moment...
...then flew off at 19:38
NC0 returned at 20:31 without any remaining fish
The weather has changed yet again, rain with very strong, gusty wind!
She flew off at 20:37
Thank you Sandra for the great updates on this nest! It makes it so easy to catch up on the nest!
Been there a few times but a long way for us but will return again!
You're very welcome, LAM!
Always so envious of those who have visited Lowes, I just haven't had the chance to go as yet, maybe one day...
